Season 01, Episode 01 Stop a Speeding Bullet

S01 E01

Stop a Speeding Bullet Jun 22, 2017 Facing an AK-47 rifle underwater, Todd Sampson trusts the extraordinary power of resistance to stop the bullet before it hits him. With help from Olympic swimmer and Physics student Cameron McEvoy, Todd explores the science of resistance by submerging one of the world's deadliest weapons an AK-47 rifle and firing it at himself from only ten feet away. In air, the same bullet could travel over a mile but underwater it's a different story. As water is almost 1,000 times denser than air, the bullet has 1,000 times more water molecules to push through, which means it loses 1,000 times more energy as it moves. Based on Cameron McEvoy's calculations, the bullet should travel no further than seven feet in water. To put this to the test, Todd calls on the expertise of Weapons Specialist John Fox, while construction guru Ran builds a carefully designed submersible gun mount. Dealing with live ammunition, and a gun that is not built for underwater use, this is a challenge that carries grave risks. Facing an AK-47 rifle at point-blank range, Todd puts his faith in water's invisible wall of resistance to stop the bullet in time.

The Human Spider Jun 21, 2017 Harnessing the incredible power of air pressure, Todd Sampson attempts to climb a 13-story building with nothing but two vacuum cleaners strapped to his back. With the help of physicist Dr. Niraj Lal, Todd explores the science of air pressure to see if he can scale a high-rise building - just like Spider-Man using two vacuum cleaners and custom-made suction pads. With a partial vacuum created inside the suction pads, there are far less air molecules on the inside pushing out than there are on the outside pushing in. The difference in pressure between the inside and outside of the pads creates enough force to hold Todd to the building about 360 pounds of force to be precise. Todd faces a grueling climb up a vertical face of sheer glass fifty-five yards high. Todd puts his faith in the invisible force of air pressure in his most difficult experiment yet.

Death Jump Jun 28, 2017 Todd Sampson takes a leap of faith by bungee jumping with two interwoven phone books, and nothing but the friction between the pages arresting his fall. With the help of astrophysicist Dr. Alan Duffy, Todd explores the law of friction and reveals the latest science behind how this daring experiment actually works. When he jumps, Todd will be starting from rest and accelerating by another ten meters per second, every second he falls. According to Alan's calculations, the phone books will have to sustain at least four times Todd's body weight. With the books carefully interleaved one page on top of the other Todd takes his leap of faith, trusting his life in the extraordinary holding power of friction.

Season 01, Episode 04 Wrecking Ball Showdown

Wrecking Ball Showdown Jun 28, 2017 Todd Sampson puts the Law of Conservation of Energy to the ultimate test by releasing a one-ton wrecking ball inches from his face. With the help of astrophysicist Dr. Alan Duffy, Todd explores one of Physics' fundamental laws with the destructive power of a giant pendulum a one-ton mass of steel swinging on a 42-foot chain. Unless extra energy is added, the Law of Conservation of Energy states that when the wrecking ball swings back towards Todd, it should go no further than the point from which it was released. But for the theory to hold, the engineering is crucial: if any extra energy is added into the system, it's game over for Todd. This is the biggest challenge for the construction team as they try to secure this deadly mass of metal to a heritage building on Cockatoo Island. There is no room for error in this experiment. With the wrecking ball hurtling towards Todd at fifteen miles per hour, he trusts the law of Conservation of Energy to stop the ball before it crushes his skull.

Flying Through Fire Jul 5, 2017 Todd Sampson goes feet first into an inferno with only a dousing of water and its miraculous heat capacity to stop him from being burnt alive. Exploring the physics of heat transfer, Todd rides a custom-made sled through a 1400-degree fire with nothing but water to protect him. With the help of physicist Jessica Bloom, Todd demonstrates water's unique ability to absorb heat. Even a thin layer of water can save his skin from being burnt in the flames. But it's a matter of time. After one second in the flames Todd's protective coating of water will start to vaporize. And if he inhales the flames, he is at risk of suffocating. Filmed away from the public on Cockatoo Island, with a team of fire-fighters and paramedics on standby, Todd trusts the science to keep him safe.

Balloons of Hazard Jul 5, 2017 Putting his faith in the science of buoyancy, Todd Sampson ties himself to a giant cluster of helium balloons in an attempt to defy gravity. With the help of astrophysicist Dr. Lisa Harvey-Smith, Todd takes flight with 130 balloons to demonstrate the upward force of buoyancy. Filled with over 3000 cubic feet of helium, the second lightest gas in the universe, Todd's cluster of balloons should displace enough air to lift him high into the sky. But this giant airship relies on calm conditions, and high winds threaten to derail the experiment. Far from commercial aircraft corridors in rural Kangaroo Valley NSW, the team get ready for what is believed to be the first ever cluster balloon flight in Australia. Todd trusts his life in the physics of buoyancy to not only give him lift off, but to also prevent him from crash-landing back to earth.
