Coronation Street is a British television soap opera first broadcast on Granada Television in 1960. It was soon syndicated on other ITV franchises. The programme concerns the lives of the residents of Coronation Street in Weatherfield, a fictional area of Salford, and centres around its terraced houses, cafe, corner shop, newsagents, textile factory and the Rovers Return pub.The programme was devised in 1960 by local scriptwriter Tony Warren at the recently formed Granada Television in Manchester. Warren's initial kitchen sink drama proposal was rejected by the station's founder Sidney Bernstein but he was persuaded by producer Harry Elton to produce the programme for thirteen pilot episodes. It was first broadcast on 9 December 1960 and within six months had become the most-watched programme on British television. It has been one of the most financially lucrative programmes on British commercial television, underpinning the success of the Granada Television franchise and the broadcaster ITV.Coronation Street is made by Granada Television at Granada Studios in Manchester. It is shown in all ITV regions as well as internationally. On 17 September 2010, it became the world's longest-running TV soap opera in production. Later, there's a misunderstanding when Elsie accuses Dennis of taking money from her purse when in fact it was her daughter Linda. Also, Linda tells Elsie that she's leaving her husband. Elsie says she'll believe it when she sees it! At number 3, there's unrest at the Barlow's. Young Kenneth Barlow has an argument with his father, Frank, when he announces that he's met a girl and he's taking her to the Imperial Hotel. Frank argues that Ken has all but forgotten his working class roots.

Harry reveals he saw Dennis at the dogs winning the money. Malcolm and Christine go to the dance. Ena walks out of hospital and back to the Mission.

Ena, seeing Arnold leaving the house from her vestry window, spreads it about that Elsie's got a fella. Harry is promoted to inspector at the bus depot.

Christine gets a bill from the plumbers for £1, 1/3. The plumber's mate, Joe Makinson, takes the bill back in sympathy when she can't pay it. Ida alerts Beattie to Albert's collapse and condition but Albert refuses to live with his daughter. Elsie has some beauty cream and starts to relax when Arnold arrives to have a chat.

Annie discovers both Florrie and Len were on their own in the Rovers when the money went missing. Elsie shocks the Walkers by refusing to go to the Rovers when Linda phones her there from Canada.

Elsie feels the article was well-written but warns Ken that Len is after him. Len insults Ken to Frank and refuses to apologise causing Frank almost to fight him in the Street. Ken realises he'll have to stand up to the residents. When he tries to put across his view point in the Rovers, Len hits him and they brawl across the pub, Ken being knocked out.

Ena discovers that the performers, the "Blue Streak Rockets", were banned and the police tell them they cannot perform. The Walkers go to a Brewery Dance, planning to stay the night in a plush hotel. Ena locks the piano lid but Minnie opens it with a hair pin. She entertains the audience of four hundred with constant renditions of Goodbye, Dolly Gray. Captain Johnson and his troupe break down but send the sealions, Bunny and Sherry on. Dennis has to cancel the concert, causing an uproar. Ena gets drunk with the Rockets. Dennis is stuck with the Rockets and sealions for the night. He gets the Rovers' key off Concepta and installs them in the pub. The Walkers return home to find sealions in the bath and the Rockets in their bed

After a good deal of thought, Harry and Len enter Lucky Lolita for the races in the last hope that she will get back to her old form. Back at the Vestry, Ena falls to the floor with a mild stroke and, as the night wears on, nobody comes to help her.

Minnie wins a tray made by Len at bingo. Len explains he wrote to Wormold about repairs. He is hurt that Elsie suspected him and she is angry with herself. The over-sixties social goes very well with the bingo and dancing. After they have left the Mission Hall, Jed, Jerry, Sheila and Doreen move in and twist into the night. The music disturbs Fred at the chip shop and, thinking it's the Over-sixties, he says he's going to complain to the police tomorrow about Swindley.

Jed sends Harry the £22 he owes him. On the pretext of returning a book, Rita turns up at No.9 dressed to kill.

Mavis Fox calls at No.11 to visit Dennis' grandmother. Elsie plays along as the cleaner. Mr Papagopolous is pleased that the stock was stolen as it was old stock that couldn't sell and was insured. Elsie demands that Dennis tells Mavis the truth. Frank tells Ken he plans to leave the GPO and buy a DIY shop. Dennis can't bring himself to tell Mavis.

When a policeman tries to get the men to quieten down at 2.00am, Albert knocks his helmet off and Alf tries to hit him. He calls for a prison van.

Len offers Elsie a no-strings relationship but she refuses. Sheila is taken to hospital in an ambulance. Frank puts shop flat tenant Ethel Tyson's rent up - she refuses to pay it.

She blames him and he hates her for not being completely interested in him. He tells her he doesn't need a wife, he needs someone who understands him. They realise they shouldn't have married. Len thinks of taking on an apprentice with all the work at the shop and the club. Dennis takes the blame for a smashed crate so that he will be sacked. After drowning his sorrows, Ken returns home to find Val has left. Val arrives at Dave's flat with her suitcase.

13 May 1964 May 13, 1964 Frank sells his shop to Summitt Supermarkets for £6,000. He buys a new car, a white zodiac, and throws a party in the Rovers. Jerry finishes at the Builder's Yard and is taken on at Roscoe & Pitts. Martha gets a passport. Frank is patronising to the Booths and is cold shouldered. The residents drink Frank's champagne but grow annoyed as he lords it over them. Ena plays the piano but the party ends abruptly as Martha dies of a heart attack in the snug.

Stan and wife Hilda look round the house and he puts £200 down, taking out a mortgage on the rest. Irma can't see how six of them will cope in the house and tells Elsie that the Street won't know what's hit them when the Ogdens move in.

Concepta, Val, Annie, Ena, Minnie, Hilda, Stan and Charlie wait in the Mission Hall with Stuart, Lucille is bridesmaid, Ken and Harry are ushers. Emily tells Jack she can't go through with it because he knows it's wrong. The wedding is cancelled. Swindley knows that Emily did the right thing. He feels that she has spoken for both of them. He goes to the honeymoon hotel alone.

2 Sep 1964 Sep 2, 1964 Florrie accuses the customers of laughing at her over her Irishman. Stan shows off the Rolls and gives Hilda, Irma, Ena, Minnie, Albert, Charlie, and Little Titch a ride in it. The dog relieves itself in it and Minnie rips a seat with her hat pin. Stan is sacked. Norman offers Lucille a contract as a singer but she turns him down. Irma has enough of Florrie's behaviour and walks out. Florrie feels old and alone and snaps, wrecking the shop and breaking the window with a tin.

Elsie and Dennis create homemade damp patches and other household problems, hoping to give Ena the impression that No.11 has been falling to pieces for years. Ena sees through it all and tells Minnie she intends to get the Tanners out of the house. The residents anticipate yet another clash between the two. In the Rovers, Ena gives Elsie her notice in writing. Elsie goes for Ena in the snug and the fight spills out into the Street. The residents take sides. Ena tells Elsie she wouldn't be throwing her out if Swindley wasn't throwing her out. Elsie refuses to listen to Ena's protests. Ena attacks her with her handbag and ends up smashing one of No.11's windows. An almost-physical fight ensues and the residents try to separate them. Swindley arrives in time to break the news to Ena that the Glad Tidings Mission is to stay open; the committee has decided to close Bold Street Mission.

Len gets a contract from Arnold Jenkinson to do a conversion job for one of his supermarkets. Ken discovers that if the twins are born before midnight he'll get tax relief on them. Willie Piggott is fined £150 for bribing Ken. Val gives birth to a girl and a boy. The Walkers break open the champagne for the residents to celebrate the birth of the first-ever set of twins on the Street.

Arthur Walker looks after the pub. The residents view the mines, 850 feet below ground level. Irma grows frightened of scaring David off. Dennis escorts Sandra. Lucille sees Harry off at Liverpool. On the coach back, David presents Irma with an engagement ring from the cavern. She accepts it.

The police rope the house off and Mr. Wormold arrives. Annie worries when Lucille doesn't return after a night out with friends. The menfolk start to shift the rubble in case Lucille is under it. She arrives home safe. The Surveyor detects no subsidence. The collapse was caused by a faulty beam over the bay window. Len is given the contract to secure the house. Ted decides to go back to the home and leaves. Lucille cries over No.7. Wormold feels it isn't worth the £300 repairs and tells Len to pull it down.

Irma, Sandra and Lucille model the garments and get mixed up back stage. Allan drops woodwork when he discovers girls. The show turns into a fiasco. Elsie is horrified to discover Dennis has bought 108 Christmas trees.

2 May 1966 May 2, 1966 Ena is accused of not paying for two tins of salmon at 4/6 each. The Store Manager saw her put them in her basket. Minnie realises Ena is confused and the police are called in and charge Ena with shoplifting. Elsie's endowment policy expires and she has £50. She decides to decorate. Ena makes the police search the Vestry and No.5 to prove she's not a thief. Ken and Elsie try to help Ena but she feels she's being patronised. She refuses a solicitor and plans to plead not guilty.

25 May 1966 May 25, 1966 Minnie has been overworking and is told to rest. Bobby goes down with flu and they are both nursed by Jed. Stan starts with his ice cream van. The skeleton staff moves into the factory in readiness for the opening and two of them, Bet Lynch and her friend Cilla investigate the Rovers. Stan does well in the ice cream van. Irma and Lucille get jobs at the factory, as welders. Annie is horrified. Jack reminds her that she started off in the weaving shed. Irma gives Hilda the job of assistant at the shop. David is annoyed. Ice cream baroness, Mary Bonnetti catches Stan on her patch and declares war on him.

15 Jun 1966 Jun 15, 1966 Len agrees to be bouncer at the Mission dance. Sheila doesn't want Jerry to be too serious about their friendship. Dennis puts his £12 week's wages on a horse to win, Wally puts on half his pension but it comes in second. Elsie tells her menfolk that if they don't give her any money they'll not get any food. Whilst Len entertains Ruth at the Rovers, the dancers blast up the music and get frenzied. They start to vandalise the Mission. Ena tries to stop them and is cornered by two thugs, Vic and Colin, in the Vestry who threaten to carve her and Lucille up.

4 Jul 1966 Jul 4, 1966 Jerry is confused over the baby. At the factory, Bet Lynch grows annoyed at Lucille's speed. Annie is horrified to discover that Lucille earns £13 a week. David promises tickets for a World Cup match in Liverpool. Sheila tells Jerry her baby is Neil's. The Walkers make Lucille agree to put some money aside each week. Ken's film society grows in numbers. But Ena, Minnie and Annie walk out when he shows a nudist film by mistake - the others ask for the showing to continue. Sheila doesn't know where she stands with Jerry.

Minnie advises Annie to fetch him back. The tech's principle sends for Ken. Annie asks Elsie for her husband back. The residents watch as Elsie goes for Annie in the Street with Hilda and Ena joining in. They are shocked when Jack appears from No.11, having nipped in through the back door.

8 May 1967 May 8, 1967 Elsie and Steve reminisce about the past. Stan discovers his Cup Final ticket is worth £10. Elsie takes Steve to the Rovers where he meets everyone, including Dennis. She keeps telling him she's a grandmother and tells him she can't see him again. David gets another ticket. He gives it to Hilda. Stan sells his ticket to Mike Ridehalgh for £10. He plans to have a day out on the money. The residents are horrified when a train crashes through the viaduct onto the Street.

10 May 1967 May 10, 1967 The menfolk set about moving rubble aided by the police. The guard is carried from the train with fractures and cuts. The police hear there was a car under the viaduct. Jack, Ena, Elsie and Lucille are missing. Jerry crawls through the rubble and pulls PC Jimmie Conway out. He says his girlfriend Sonia Peters is under the rubble with someone else. The police bring in a power digger. Annie feels sure Jack is under the rubble. Jerry threatens a reporter when he harasses Minnie over Ena's disappearance. Elli Jane Peters, Sonia's grandmother, turns up and is taken in hand by Minnie. Five people are carried out of the wreckage in Victoria Street. Jack and Lucille turn up to Annie's relief. David crawls under the rubble and finds Sonia. He can't tell if she's alive or not. Elsie turns up. Sonia is declared dead, Conway tries to comfort Elli. Lucille breaks down as Sonia was a school friend. David tells the other men that he's found Ena under the rubble.

30 Aug 1967 Aug 30, 1967 Lucille hears that the Hewitts are coming over for a visit. Elsie says they can come to the wedding. Annie, Lucille, Minnie, Ena, Val, Elsie, Hilda, Irma and Emily go to Tatton Park. Dennis steers a barge full of Jack, Albert, Steve, Stan, David and Gregg through the canal. They are horrified when a crate of beer falls into the water. Their horse, Horace, keeps refusing to move. Albert is seasick. The women try to escape from the lecherous coach driver, Frank Hoyle. Minnie is courted by Herbert Whittle, an elderly guide at the stately home. Gregg worries about his duties as Best Man. Both parties are shocked when the barge ends up in Tatton Park. Stan and Jack are forced to look round the house by Annie and Hilda. Val tells Steve not to mess Elsie about. If he doesn't intend to love Elsie forever he shouldn't marry her. Steve tells Elsie he's busy all weekend so won't see her until the wedding.

Harry admits to Lucille that there's nothing for her in Ireland. Dennis and Gregg read the telegrams from Mrs Tanner, Frank Barlow, Jerry, Irma, Albert, Jim Mount, Capt Bill Myers, Miami Modes, Christine Appleby, Billy Walker, Florrie and Norman Lindley, Charlie Moffitt and Jed. Emily and Annie get drunk. The Tanners leave for Lisbon. Len and Harry go to visit an old mate. On the way the van breaks down. Harry tries to repair it but the jack slips and he is crushed to death.

Len bangs on Elsie's door until she lets him in. He makes her talk to him. She tells him she's left Steve. She didn't fit in in America. He makes her admit that Steve wasn't the perfect husband but was a swine. She tells him they had nothing in common and nothing to talk about. Steve was posted to South America - he volunteered and didn't want Elsie to go with him. She tells Len that Steve had told her he was sorry he'd married her. She doesn't know what's going to happen to her.

29 May 1968 May 29, 1968 Dennis and Jenny both wake at 5.00am and wake their households up to try to clear their nerves. Ena thinks she's heard of Les Clegg before. Albert buys a stag's head with the present money. The residents prepare for the reception but feel sure something is going to go wrong because it's Dennis. Elsie, Linda, Ernie Sutton and Jerry witness Dennis and Jenny's marriage. Annie, Lucille, Gordon, Maggie, Les, Len, Emily, Minnie, Ena, Albert and Wally Tanner join in the reception. Jerry shocks everyone by his speech - urging the Tanners not to be selfish and to work at their marriage. Unseen by anyone Jerry leaves for London. Jenny doesn't mind about Dennis going to Bristol. Les leaves the reception early because he doesn't want to stay around drink. Jenny spends her wedding night alone on Minnie's sofa.

In a slanging match in the middle of the street Hilda accuses Elsie of scheming to get Stan on her own. Elsie tells her she's not that desperate. Ken decides he'll have to sell the car to buy new furniture. Elsie crashes her car into the back of Ken's. Len moves into No.9. Effie Spicer moves into No.4, next to Ena, and crosses her with her airs and graces.

7 Aug 1968 Aug 7, 1968 Convict Frank Riley traps Val. She tells him she has no children and is only just married. The womenfolk gather in the Rovers, not wanting to be on their own whilst the convict is on the loose. Val tries to alert Ena by banging on the water pipes. She is terrified when Peter wakes up and Riley realises she has children. Ken phones Val but Riley refuses to let her answer it, threatening to hurt Peter and Susan. Ena hears the phone ringing and begins to worry. Riley takes a fancy to Val and starts caressing her. Ena raises the alarm. Annie takes charge and Jack phones the police. Riley demands money and clothes from Val. He then tells her he wants something from her. The police move the residents into houses so no one is alone. Val promises that she won't raise the alarm if Riley leaves her alone but Riley sees the police outside. Ken arrives at the Rovers, not knowing anything of what is happening.

Elsie prepares herself to tells Steve 'no' for the last time. In the taxi she hears over the radio that Len is at Steve's. She asks the taxi to take her home. The police arrive to tell Elsie that Steve is dead.

Stan wants to warn Dave off but can't because of the deeds to the house. At a club after the dogs Dave and Irma bump into Bet Lynch and Bob Chadwick, a former associate of Dave's. Irma remembers Bet from their time at the PVC Factory. Keith Lucas, a customer at the Rovers takes an interest in Betty. Irma and Bet enjoy themselves. Lucas follows Betty home and tells her that Cyril put him in prison three years ago and he wants his own back.

Ena and Minnie remember him and they tell him of the death of Martha Longhurst six years previously. Len and Bet turn up at the Registry Office and surprise Alan and Elsie as their witnesses. Irma and Bet move into the flat. Elsie and Alan marry. The residents throw a surprise party at the Rovers for the Howards before they honeymoon in Paris. Ray tells Len that Alan, despite signs of wealth, owes them £350 and it looks as if he has money troubles.

Emily tells Annie she won't work the bar anymore. Irma is frightened when Joe comes on strong. Annie feels that she'll have to run the pub on her own with Billy. He is against the idea. A drunken Joe tells a scared Irma how he killed Steve Tanner.

16 December 1970 Dec 16, 1970 Joe lets himself into Irma's flat, locking it behind him. She is terrified. Greg and Gary tell Maggie that they think Irma is in danger. Gary rings Major Ryan. Maggie tells the regulars about Joe's confession whilst Gregg breaks the news to Elsie. The residents don't know what to do about Irma. Ena suggests they throw a welcome home party for Ken, inviting Irma and Joe. The residents persuade Joe and Irma to come to the party in the Rovers. The police and US Army M.P's rush to the Street. Joe escapes through the toilet window when he realises the Ogdens know nothing about a party supposedly being long organised and realises it's a set up. Joe takes refuge with Minnie and his gun in No.5.

Charlie Braddock and Gina tell Len and Ray that she's found a better job and they throw Gina out. The residents gather at the Rovers to bid farewell to the Barlows. As Ken waits in the pub, Val gets ready. She tries to mend a plug on a hairdryer and electrocutes herself, starting a fire by knocking an electric fire into a packing case.

Irma tells Hilda that Ray drove the van away. When Hilda breaks the news to him, Stan is furious and threatens violence.

Ray doesn't like Mel's ideas of using bad workmanship and realises he's being used. They fight and Irma and Francoise join in.

7 July 1971 Jul 7, 1971 The judges arrive: Annie on cakes, Emily on wines, Alf on beer, George Greenwood on flowers and veg. Maggie bakes a cake for Ray to enter. Alan agrees on £5 a week more plus 15%. Minnie gets drunk helping Alf test the beer. Emily also gets drunk on the wine. Len is horrified to learn that he has won the cake-decorating competition and he realises Ray has set him up with Maggie's cake. George recognises the Orchid as one of his own to Hilda's shame. Harriet Esmondhalgh wins the beer and wine prizes. Albert is praised for his Sweet Peas, Dahlias, Geraniums, Cabbages and wins the challenge cup. Hilda is sad that she has to stay with Stan and not George. Billy packs for London. An anonymous cartoonist has drawn cartoons of the judges for the Gazette - Annie is horrified at hers and threatens legal action against whoever is responsible.

Len goes to see Harry at his roadworks site.

Franny Slater tells Sharon Duffy the truth about Ray's penthouse. The Rovers win the Olympics. Annie gets a call from Concepta Hewitt saying she's arriving for a visit. Sharon persuades Ray to give her the key to the flat.

Rita gets into a fight with a drunken woman and ends up on Chapman's lap, all to the delight of Alf and Alderman Rogers.

Rita is full of admiration for Emily, who forms friendships with the strippers - Ernie can't believe it. Mr Worsley, the Health Inspector, calls at No.13. He finds mice and cockroaches and assures Stan he's done nothing wrong - they'll fumigate No.13.

23rd May 1973 May 23, 1973 At Woburn Abbey, Minnie buys a teatowel off The Duke of Bedford in the souvenir shop. Billy asks Alan for a job but Elsie doesn't approve. Len tells Ray the shop is his - he has bought it for £3,000 and he's got Rita running it. Deirdre can be her assistant. Ena finds an old friend working in Woburn, Dora Wainwright, who introduces them all to the Duke. Billy packs his bags and leaves Weatherfield, with a note on the bar explaining all to Annie.

Glyn Thomas wants Bet or Betty to be his cook whilst he's at the Rovers. Betty agrees to be Ernie's dance partner with Emily away. Mavis goes for the interview at The Kabin, but her bottle goes and she runs out. Muriel Chaplin starts the dancing lessons. Hilda, Ted and Ernie are the only ones interested. Glyn refuses to look on Betty as senior barmaid. Rita tells Jerry the job's Mavis' if she wants it. Rita is puzzled by a number of men asking for the "Pig Producers Monthly".

On the way back from Jackson's Chip Shop the Ogdens find Bet bleeding and unconscious in the ginnel.

Billy tells Draper he hasn't a leg to stand on legally. Draper manically drives the car into the Rovers' door, smashing it.

Emily has her heart set on being Lady Bracknell in RADA's production of The Importance of Being Earnest. Ernie favours Annie and suggests Emily plays Gwendaline. Albert rows with Janet over her attitude towards Peter and Susan. Deirdre wins the part of Gwendaline for herself. Billy takes Danny on at the garage. Ken gets the part of Algernon. Janet tells Ken to take the day off tomorrow and bring the twins home.

24th April 1974 Apr 24, 1974 Hilda is on the verge of a breakdown. Stan asks Len if they can use the money frrom the smoking syndicate but Len refuses. Mrs Morris wants her sugar bowl, used as a prop in the play, back during the show. When Mavis refuses to give it to her she calls the police. Stan finds something in an advertisement to help Hilda and gets her to sign an application form. The production goes well, despite Mrs Morris snatching her sugar bowl back on stage. Mavis is shocked when she walks into the mens' dressing room to be confronted by a naked Billy.

10th June 1974 Jun 10, 1974 Albert returns and demands Dolores' removal from his yard. Billy has put Alison up but demands that she goes before Annie returns from visiting Joan. Albert is sickened to hear the Barlows have split. Stan takes the donkey back and is reported to the Health Inspector by Maggie. He is given forty-eight hours to move the donkey by Inspector Tom Meeker. Alf tries to get Maggie interested in the modernisation again but she's not bothered. Rita takes Alison in and spoils Len's evening by babysitting Jonathan.

10th July 1974 Jul 10, 1974 Gordon gives Maggie away and she marries Ron Cooke with guests: Betty, George Farmer, Norma, Sidney Wilson, Mavis, Annie, Billy, Bet, Albert, Minnie, Jerry, Stan, Hilda, Len and Rita. Alf drowns his sorrows in the Rovers where Winnie Gregson minds the bar for the day. The wedding reception is held at the Community Centre, with telegrams from the Bishops and Jacko. The Hopkins show Granny round the Corner Shop. She thinks they could get it for a bargain. The Cookes leave for Zaire.

30th September 1974 Sep 30, 1974 Blanche advises Deirdre to fight Ray back. Sheila Crossley plans to throw a party to show her appreciation to the Bishops. Deirdre hates working with Ray. Blanche is angry when he makes her cry and slaps Ray in the Rovers for harassing Deirdre. Jerry wants to take Mavis to the party but she isn't sure about going. Bet enters 'Find the Football' in the Gazette and ropes in some of the girls when Len insinuates a woman could never win it. Billy rings Deirdre to say that he'll be home tomorrow. Ray spikes Jerry's pale ale with vodka. Rita flirts with Ken to make Len angry. To Mavis's horror, a drunken Jerry gives a speech, saying how much Sheila means to him. Mavis runs out and Jerry is sick. Annie is annoyed to hear from Blanche that Billy has phoned Deirdre as well as her and even more put out when Blanche hints that wedding bells are in the offing.

14th October 1974 Oct 14, 1974 The women laze around on their holiday in Majorca. Deirdre is pursued by Brian Dodds. Emily is eaten by mosquitoes. Bet picks up a property developer, Martin Barrett. Vera doesn't like it when Tricia flirts with Tony Bolton. His father and storeman at the warehouse, Fred Bolton, is pleased that his son has started at the warehouse with him. There's a hold up in the delivery and he has to store a load of leather and suede jackets in the store. Tony is interested and tells a friend Paul Meggitt. To the girls' surprise, Mavis falls for a handsome Spaniard called Pedro. Megan invites Ernie for a meal. Tony steals Fred's store key and gets a copy cut. Ernie and Stan go to an Italian for dinner. Ernie tells Granny he has to work late. Mavis is delighted when Pedro kisses her.

He talks Blanche into it. Mavis decides to accept Carlos. Big Arthur wants his ham back but Minnie has already started on it. Eddie has to pay compensation and give it all back. Carlos gives Mavis his ring. He tells her they must marry at once as he needs a work permit. He offers her money but she angrily refuses to marry him. Bet and Eddie are just getting passionate when P.C. Sadler of the police arrives and arrest him.

20th January 1975 Jan 20, 1975 Rita tries to find out why Mavis is upset but Mavis is silent. The residents are pleased that the Barlows are back together. Lynn Johnson agrees to go to the police if Len will go with her. Albert catches Bobby on Gilbert's loft surounded by feathers. The Barlows like being just good friends. Len lets hysterical Lynn stay at No.9. When he tries to go to work she begs him not to leave her alone, her shouts being heard by the Barlows. Minnie tries to console Albert. Mavis tells Rita about Carlos. Janet and Ken agree to get together to talk about a divorce. Albert overhears a woman screaming in No.9. Ray and Jerry enter the house and find Lynn's body.

Len refuses to commit himself to Bet; he just wants her at the moment. She tells him she'd like them to live together. When it is clear he wants the occasional one night stand she tells him she's having none of it. Annie is horrified that Billy is to foot the bill. She announces the date to the regulars. Steve Baker arrives looking for Bet.

7th July 1975 Jul 7, 1975 Blanche is amazed by Deirdre's calmness. Ray is annoyed that Len got him drunk at the stag night. He doesn't like the way Len is taking him over. Blanche is upset that Deirdre is getting married in her work suit. Annie thinks Deirdre is unstable. Len plans a reception in the Rovers. Blanche gets Ernie to take photographs. She and Len are witnesses and Jerry and Rita look on as Ray and Deirdre are married. Stan has a check-up in hospital. Deirdre goes to the Rovers under protest and the regulars toast the Langtons with champagne.

6th October 1975 Oct 6, 1975 The residents seek refuge at Bessie Street School. As Annie is still shopping, Bet and Betty save her valuables. The Bishops lay on food and tea at the school. Minnie and Bobby find themselves at the New Old Inn run by Ginny Spencer and her daughters Tracey and Kim. She is joined by more residents. As word spreads that the pub is open, the refugees leave the distress centre in favour of the New Old Inn. The firemen find two bodies in the warehouse. Len finds out that one of them is Edna Gee. Ivy and Gail break down when they hear the news and Ivy tries to comfort Fred Gee, Edna's husband. The police refuse to let the residents return to their homes. The Langtons invite Len and Ken to stay at Blanche's. Deirdre is furious when the others follow.

12th November 1975 Nov 12, 1975 Janice Berry refuses a girl admittance to a dance when she doesn't bring her cigarettes. Len, Mavis, Emily, Deirdre and Ray go to Jerry's funeral. Janice makes it clear to Ken she fancies him. Bet feels that Frank Bradley will only use her when he wants to. Betty contacts the brewery to see if Stan's consumption at the Rovers is a record. They plan to send a photographer round. Ken invites Ernie to give a film show for the kids. He begins to realise Janice is not what she seems. Mike Fielding from the brewery comes with a photographer who takes Stan's picture for publicity and they grant him free beer for a week as thanks. Mary Broughton tells Ken that Janice blackmails the kids. Bet lets Frank stay the night with her.

24th November 1975 Nov 24, 1975 Les Grimes and Neil Foxall find nothing of value in the living room so go upstairs. Les doesn't like the idea but Neil pushes him. Annie wakes up and catches them in her bedroom. She refuses to tell them where her money is and has a battle of nerves with Neil. Seeing lights on, Albert tells Len and Ray there's something going on at the Rovers. Neil refuses to believe Annie keeps her money in the bank. Les and Neil try to run off when Ray and Len arrive. They fight but the lads escape. Annie goes into delayed shock. Len sports a black eye. Annie refuses to bring the police in. She tells Len that someone has written to the Brewery complaining about her visits to Joan. She's worried that they will think she's vulnerable. Annie falls downstairs and knocks herself unconscious. Betty phones for an ambulance.

Mon Jan 5 1976 Jan 21, 1976 John Lane tells Gail he has to monitor her calls. She begins to be suspicious when he knows her name. Ernie calls on Gail. She introduces him to Lane. Gail worries when Lane shows no signs of leaving at 11.00pm. He tells her to get into bed. Emily is suspicious about Lane and calls the police. John breaks down once the police arrive. He is arrested. The news reaches Stan that Polly Ogden has had an eight and a half pound baby girl. He buys drinks all round. The residents think that Dave Smith is planning to open a club on the warehouse site. Dave is shocked to find Blanche, an old friend, in the Street and dumps Brenda Holden for her.

9th February 1976 Feb 9, 1976 A TV detector van roams the area. Len and Rita have a date at the Gatsby. A reluctant Stan poses for Hilda as part of her art classes. Rita is furious when Len spends their date chatting to a woman her recognises there - Donna Parker. He arranges to see her again. Fearing that they haven't a licence Stan tries to hide the TV but drops it. Hilda then reveals that she's just bought a licence. Len explains to Rita who Donna is and tells her that he intends to get £500 out of Donna for what she did to Alf. The Ogdens TV is bust. Annie offers Terry Bradshaw a permanent job but he wants to return to being a chippie. She is caught with an out-of-date TV licence by Brian Howe of the detection agency.

17th March 1976 Mar 17, 1976 As the night wears on Hilda searches for Stan and fears he's dead. Albert and Stan help themselves to the beer barrels in the Rovers' cellar. Hilda fears Stan is with Clara Regan. Albert and Stan get more and more drunk in the cellar. Hilda decides to report Stan missing to the police. In the morning Annie finds Albert and Stan when she opens up. The Bishops sleep badly on their bed. Annie bans Stan and Albert from the Rovers. Ken tries to get Wendy into bed but she resists.

5th April 1976 Apr 5, 1976 The word spreads that Deirdre is pregnant. She puts the gossipers right. Len gets a phone call to say that someone is coming to stay and gets Hilda to tidy the house in readiness but he won't say who his guest is. Ray enjoys everyone buying him drinks before Rita tells them he's not going to be a father. Rita thinks Len is making the house tidy for her but it is Elsie Howard who arrives at Len's, suitcase in hand.

14th July 1976 Jul 14, 1976 The Bishops feel it's unfair that they should have to close the shop whilst the Ogdens just sail through life. Ena tells Len and Eddie about Frank Holmes. They hide as she talks to Holmes. She realises he is a con-man. Ernie goes to the bank to ask for a loan. Len and Eddie stop Holmes from leaving. Eddie nearly throttles him. Len takes him to the police station. Albert supervises the residents to sort out his allotment. Eddie is embarrassed about making a citizen's arrest. Ena tells Len she twigged Holmes because Hettie Boothroyd has been dead for five months. Hilda shows the "muriel" off. Annie is horrified that the other wallpaper is the same as her bedroom paper. Ray carves "Albert Rules OK" on Albert's prize marrow. Ernie is refused a bank loan and goes into liquidation.

18th August 1976 Aug 18, 1976 Ray discovers a load of plumbing stock has been stolen from the site. Len tells the contractor. Stripper, Josie Steel, goes through her routine with Ernie at No.3. Emily walks in half way through. She accuses Ernie of thinking more of letting Rita down than her. Rita throws Emily out of The Kabin when she groups her in the same category as the strippers at the Gatsby. Jack Barker and Doug West steal tiles from the site. The Bishops apologise to each other. He tells her he'll give the job up. Len and Ray suspect Barker of being the thief.

11th October 1976 Oct 11, 1976 The Warehouse is opened up again as Baldwin's Casuals. Elsie challenges Len to take her out for the night to prove he can still show a girl a good time. Londoner Mike Baldwin arrives in Weatherfield to supervise his new factory. As the office isn't finished he interviews Ernie at No.3, catching him unaware. He tells him he's opening a denim factory and is after a wages clerk. Rita gives Len two free tickets for the Gatsby. He says he'll take Ken. Rita is annoyed when Len takes Elsie there instead while Elsie is annoyed that Len didn't pay for the tickets. Len grows jealous of Rita's agent. He tells her she can't have a week off to sing in Torquay. She is adamant that she's going so he threatens her with the sack. Rita hits him and he falls to the floor, hitting his head.

Mon Jan 3 1977 Jan 24, 1977 The Langtons wait in hospital together. Bet sports a bruised face. Deirdre is taken to the delivery room. Ray is relieved when he doesn't have to be present at the birth. Eddie sells watches. Mavis buys one for Derek. Deirdre is delivered of a daughter. Ray is delighted. Bet buys one of Eddie's watches. Mavis discovers hers has stopped. Blanche arrives to meet her granddaughter. Hilda tells Emily that Ernie left the dance early. Emily is suspicious as he was late coming home. Eddie refuses to refund Mavis' money so Bet tells him the police were around looking for stolen watches. Ray throws a celebration at the flat where Hilda tells Blanche that Deirdre was on her own when she went into labour.

21st February 1977 Feb 21, 1977 In the morning Ken finds Janet unconscious in his bed and calls an ambulance. Suzie tries to worm her way into Elsie's affections. Elsie tells Suzie she doesn't want her at No.11 and she can't move in. Janet is rushed to hospital but she is already dead. Ena takes care of a stunned Ken. Emily is shaken by Janet's death. Bet gives Suzie lots of stories about rotten landladies. Ken is questioned over the circumstances of Janet's death.

7th March 1977 Mar 7, 1977 Elsie agrees to let Suzie stay another week when she buys her a birthday present. Bet refuses to leave No.5. Suzie buys Elsie a face mask. To please her Suzie decides to clean her soot-filled chimney with a brick. Len receives an invite to Stanley Fairclough's wedding. Rita tells him she'd like to go with him. He tells her how Stanley doesn't really want him to go. Suzie drops the brick down the wrong chimney and covers the Ogdens' parlour, and the Ogdens themselves, in soot.

20th April 1977 Apr 20, 1977 Len and Alf's car has a puncture. Rita is told to drive round the block by Ken as the groom hasn't turned up yet. Len and Alf make it to the church before Rita comes back and the wedding takes place. The manager of the Greenvale Hotel, Ted Brownlow, thinks he recognises Elsie when she makes it to the reception. Stan and Hilda gatecrash the reception but are too late for the free bar. Len and Rita Fairclough are waved off on honeymoon.

6th June 1977 Jun 6, 1977 Deirdre tells Ray they're not going to London if they can't find someone to look after Tracy. Ray gets the Bishops to agree to look after her. Eddie and Ken talk Ena into being Queen Victoria on the Silver Jubilee float. Fred portrays Sir Francis Drake, with one of Jack Walker's bowls. Ernie is Walter Raleigh, Ken Sir Edmund Hilary and Eddie plays a caveman. Annie is Queen Elizabeth I. Emily is thrilled to have Tracy for a weekend. Stan has to move the lorry in the night and leaves the lights on. Deirdre refuses to have the Bishops looking after Tracy; they've never had children. The players sit on the lorry and wait for the off but the lorry's batteries are dead.

8th June 1977 Jun 8, 1977 Bet goes to the park to see the other Silver Jubilee floats, still dressed as Britannia. Ray tells the Bishops they're not going to London after all. Annie is annoyed when everyone blames her for getting a duff lorry from the Brewery. Alf informs everyone that it was Stan's fault. The residents demand a kangaroo court for Stan. Albert is the judge, Fred prosecutes and Eddie defends. Stan is found guilty and has to buy drinks all round. Ray arranges with Blanche to look after Tracy. Bet is highly commended in the fancy dress parade. Mike tells Elsie business is failing and they may have to go on a three day week.

3rd August 1977 Aug 3, 1977 Ena confronts Annie in the Rovers over the accusations laid at Betty's door. She tells Annie that there are rumours going round Weatherfield that Annie sacked Betty for dipping into the till. Annie demands to know who is the source of the rumours, and Ena informs her that the gossip is emanating from Nellie Harvey's lair, The Laughing Donkey. Annie is annoyed to realise that her own idle gossip with Nellie has been made public. Annie apologises to Betty but Betty isn't satisfied. Ethel Platt warns Auntie Edie that Mavis may marry Derek. Edie assures her she'll put a stop to it. Hilda holds a séance with Bet, Elsie, Gail and Suzie. Hilda goes into a trance and the table collapses. Bet tells Betty that Nellie has been talking about her honesty. Mavis tells Edie she wants to live her own life and she may have to go into a home. Betty confronts Annie and tells her that she's going to sue her for defamation of character.

Hilda decides to camp out for Perkins sale to buy a colour TV for £5. The residents hang around the Rovers in the hope of a fight. Hilda camps outside the store. Len hits Fred in the Rovers. Rita drags him home. Hilda is horrified when a meths-drinking tramp, Ozzie, camps down with her.

9th January 1978 Jan 9, 1978 Tommo and Dave follow Mike and Ernie back to the factory. Emily plans a summer holiday abroad. Hilda is bitter that she hasn't got a colour TV. Eddie promises to get her one. Steve is embarrassed when the factory girls tease him about Suzie. Renee is flattered when Alf rings her from London. Ernie makes up the wages. Eddie gives Hilda a green and blue screen to put on the black and white TV. She thinks it's useless and refuses to have it. Tommo and Dave, with shotgun demand the wages from Ernie. He is in the middle of handing it over when Mike comes into the wages office. Tommo fires the gun and Ernie hits the floor. Mike calls an ambulance as he's still breathing.

11th January 1978 Jan 11, 1978 Ernie is rushed to Weatherfield General. The police question Mike and force him to give accurate descriptions of the gunmen. Ernie undergoes emergency surgery. Ivy and Vera are in shock after Ernie's shooting. Emily returns from work to find the police in the Street. She realises something has happened at the factory. When Elsie breaks the news to her, she collapses. Betty takes Emily to the hospital. Mike blames himself, thinking he panicked the gunmen. A surgeon, Mr Liston, breaks the news to Emily that Ernie is dead.

16th January 1978 Jan 16, 1978 The police question two men about the shooting. Mavis takes charge of Emily. Emily can't see any point in life going on. Reporters descend on the Street. Mike and Emily identify Ernie's body. Albert is surprised when his chiropodist is a woman, Sally Robson. Elsie lays on lunch for Emily and Ken. Emily can't eat anything but is grateful for their support. Emily's sister, Norah Seddon, arrives to sort Emily out but she isn't grateful.
S19 E05Jan 18, 1978
18th January 1978 Jan 18, 1978 Emily makes an effort to cope with Ernie's funeral. She is surprised by the amount of wreaths that arrive. Annie has a cold so she has to miss Ernie's funeral. As a mark of respect she doesn't open the Rovers until after the funeral. Norah Seddon, Ken, Bet, Betty, Mike, Ivy, Mavis, Ray, Elsie and Suzie help Emily bury Ernie. Suzie can't stop crying. Ernie's friend Rev Hope from the Mawdsley Street Chapel Mission conducts the service. Emily shows no emotion at the graveside. Ernie is buried in the family plot. Albert's foot keeps playing him up. Ivy breaks down at the funeral. Mike pays for the funeral and offers Emily any financial help. Bet is depressed after the funeral and tries to get the residents to get back to normal as soon as possible. Norah takes Emily home with her.

8th February 1978 Feb 8, 1978 Hilda grabs Suzie's leg and tries to pull her down. She manages to keep hold of her shoe. She is horrified when a pigeon flies down from the hole into their bedroom. Stan weakly demands that Suzie pays for the damage to the ceiling. She puts on a limp and threatens to sue him for not having a safe ceiling. Ena is holidaying with the Lomaxes in Hartlepool. Fred offers to help Emily with any manual jobs now Ernie is dead. Hilda demands money for the ceiling but Elsie physically throws her out of the house. Emily sorts through Ernie's clothes to give to the Mission. She asks Mavis not to treat her like an invalid. She plans to return to work at the hospital. Hilda goes up into the loft and puts her broom through Elsie's ceiling to pay her back.

20th March 1978 Mar 20, 1978 Len spends the night in a police cell. Rita regrets denying him to the police. Elsie celebrates her birthday. Ken, Mavis, Bet and Renee's mother and step-father Daisy and Joe Hibbert gather for Alf and Renee's wedding. Len tells Rita he can't believe she let the police arrest him. He has to attend court. Renee is upset that Len hasn't arrived at the Registry Office as he has the ring. Daisy offers her hers but it doesn't fit. Elsie receives a depressing letter which puts her off going to the Roberts' wedding. Len and Rita arrive just in time. Len and Bet witness the marriage of Alf and Renee by the registrar, Mr. Fearnley.

Mon Jan 1 1979 Jan 8, 1979 Eddie gives Hilda a frame for her abstract painting. Albert finds Dave Barnes in the house and orders him out. Dave shoves him away and waits for Ken. Eddie shows the painting off in the Rovers without telling anyone who did it. Annie likes it and buys it for £20. Emily takes Gail on at Dawson's Cafe. Brian meets Gail in the Rovers - he is chatty but she tells him to get lost. Ken finds Dave at No.1 holding Albert prisoner. Dave threatens to kill Ken but Ken somehow manages to knock him unconscious to the floor. Albert keeps him in check with the poker when he comes to. Ken tells him he is not having an affair with Karen and advises him to learn to read and write himself. Albert thinks he's a fool when he lets Dave go. Hilda is thrilled that Eddie got £20 for the picture and they split the money in half. She is delighted that Annie has bought it and kisses Eddie. Dave wants the police informed so he can tell a court about Karen and Ken's affair. Albert tells Ken he's going to report Dave to the police.

7th March 1979 Mar 7, 1979 Renee isn't happy with the idea of Alf working with her full-time but she doesn't know how to tell him. Gail confesses to springing the trap in Dawson's Cafe to let the mouse go free - Emily is glad. They worry as the news of the mouse keeps customers away. Deirdre is touched as Sally Norton buys Tracy a doll. Deirdre makes excuses to stop Sally taking Tracy out. When Hilda goes on about Dawson's mouse Ena reminds her that she had to have No.13 fumigated. Alf can't wait to give the GPO up. Renee tells him she doesn't want him working with her; they'd get on each others nerves. She accuses him of marrying her for the shop. Eddie provides a cat to catch the mouse for £3 a night. Emily and Gail don't like the idea of bloodsports and refuse the cat. Eddie baits the trap again. Alf is upset that Renee doesn't want him. The mouse is killed in the trap. Deirdre leaves Tracy outside the Rovers whilst she calls on Annie. They are disturbed by a terrible crashing sound. Deirdre races outside to find a lorry has spilt its load of timber into the front of the Rovers, crashing into the front of the pub itself. Hysterically, she claws at the timber which Tracy is under.

12th March 1979 Mar 12, 1979 Whilst Deirdre tries to free Tracy, the police are called for. Inside the pub, Alf lies unconscious on the floor and Mike's leg is trapped under the timber. Ken helps Deirdre from the Rovers - she has to crawl over the timber. Emily takes her in. Renee is shocked to see Alf unconscious but he is still breathing. Bet takes care of Mike. Ena and Emily take charge of Deirdre and try to calm her. Alf, Len and Mike are taken to hospital. The driver of the lorry is found dead and Deirdre is convinced Tracy is dead too. Annie is in shock and has to be cared for by Betty. Bet breaks down at the thought of Tracy under the timber. A piece of glass cuts Betty's arm. Ena says a special prayer for the safe return of Tracy. A fireman finds Tracy's doll but Tracy herself is not to be found under the timber. 9th April 1979 Apr 9, 1979 Ivy asks Brian not to tell anyone about the engagement until she's had time to come to terms with it. She wants time to think about breaking them up. Eddie names the hens after the Street's residents. Gail doesn't like the idea of keeping the engagement quiet but goes along to keep the peace. Suzie tells her to get things straight with Ivy. Hilda returns home to find a chicken on her table. She is amazed to see the yard full of hens and tells Eddie to get rid of them. Gail and Brian choose an engagement ring from a catalogue. Rita tells Derek he's a louse to give the cutlery to his mother after Mavis risked her job to help him win the prize. He tells Mavis the cutlery is hers but she doesn't want it as it wasn't offered to her in the first place. Hilda is horrified that one of the hens is named after her. Suzie is angry to overhear Ivy putting Gail down in the Rovers and tells her she doesn't think Brian is good enough for Gail. Eddie tells Hilda the hens are going to be slaughtered. She guiltily agrees to let them stay so long as they lay eggs and are profitable. Gail writes to her mum telling her about the engagement. Derek makes Mavis accept the cutlery and she happily promises to cook him a meal to christen it.

16th April 1979 Apr 16, 1979 Gail celebrates her 21st birthday. Elsie returns from holiday and is delighted to hear Gail is engaged. Hilda persuades Fred to let her wash-up behind the bar as Annie and Bet are away, just so she can mingle with the party in the Select. Alf returns from hospital. Renee treats him like an invalid. Gail's floozy mother, Audrey Potter, arrives and gives her approval of Brian however Gail isn't happy to see her. Brian tells Ivy he's letting her down by not going to the party. Suzie fancies the disc jockey Peter Hockley and lures him away from his turn table. Audrey dresses up and is the centre of attention. The men fall over themselves to please her. Bert persuades Ivy to attend the party. She and Audrey are cold towards each other. Fred has to end the Select party as its closing time so Elsie invites everyone round after Bert has announced the engagement. Audrey leads the conga down the Street. Rita is taken aback to see Len eagerly following Audrey.

23rd April 1979 Apr 23, 1979 The Ogdens are delighted when the hens lay six eggs. Rita is annoyed that she's left with a load of Derek's Easter novelties. She offers Ken three boxes at 12p each novelty. Ken makes Hilda see that the hens are costing a lot to feed - more than the eggs would cost. Alf ventures into the Rovers. He looks forward to going back to work. Fred buys a wig. Annie and Betty can't believe it, they decide not to mention it as he'll be self-conscious about it. Ken decides to buy the novelties from Renee at 10p each. The residents are amazed at Fred's wig and manage to restrain their comments until Albert tells him he looks daft. Fred gets annoyed when everyone laughs at him. Hilda decides the hens aren't laying enough to earn their keep; they'll have to go. In the Corner Shop, Annie criticises Renee's soup selection causing Alf to rush from the back and shout at her, telling her she's nothing without her airs and graces. Annie and Renee are shocked at his out-of-character outburst.

4th June 1979 Jun 4, 1979 Eddie takes possession of a metal detector. He plans to search for precious metals with it. Stan doesn't think it will work. Albert tells Eddie he found an old coin on his allotment once. Ena realises he's lying. Billy persuades Deirdre to go out with him. She lets Emily believe she's going out with Ken. Hilda complains of backache. Albert gives Eddie permission to look for treasure on the allotment. Ken calls on Emily whilst Deirdre is out. She is shocked that he's not with Deirdre. Albert tells Ena there's a lot of old nails in his allotment which Eddie's detector will pick up and will cause him to dig the allotment up for him. Billy reveals he wants a loan of £2,500 off Annie to buy a wine bar in St Helier in Jersey. Deirdre thinks it's a good idea.

Wed Jan 2 1980 Mar 24, 1980 Mavis is haunted by phone calls from a mystery man who knows her name and tells her he wants to see her in her nightie. Albert tells Ken that Deirdre is after a husband. Ken tells him it's none of his business. Deirdre helps Mavis out at The Kabin for some extra money. Mavis calls in the police over the caller. They think the caller is a customer. Gail is annoyed when Brian spends money on records rather than saving up for a house deposit. The police persuade Mavis to agree to meeting the caller, they will be watching. Len visits the Gatsby and asks Ralph Lancaster where Rita is. Ralph says he doesn't know and threatens him with his bouncer. Mavis waits in the precinct but the man doesn't turn up.

28th May 1980 May 28, 1980 Arnold advises Emily to invest her money in stocks and shares. Ivy works out a shopping rota for the machinists. Deirdre types up a letter for Arnold to his bank manager, asking for his overdraft to be extended. Emily wonders what his financial position is. Hilda gets bored, stuck in bed with Stan. Emily fears Arnold is after her money. Annie pays a sick visit to the Ogdens, to Hilda's shame. Mike refuses to let the girls have a shopping hour. He tells Pauline he's not running a charity. Pauline is furious and accuses him of destroying her authority with the workers. She tells him he's humiliated her and she's had enough. She quits and walks out.

9th July 1980 Jul 9, 1980 Hilda calls round to Elsie to borrow a cup of sugar. She finds the sofa ablaze and tries to drag Elsie clear but she has to call for Stan to help. Ken and Deirdre talk to each other at the party for the first time since they split. He tries to be close to her but she isn't interested. Stan and Hilda drag Elsie out of the smoke-filled house. Hilda breaks up Arnold and Emily's party for help. The fire brigade arrive but Ken and Stan have already put the fire out. Elsie is full of smoke but refuses to go to hospital. Dr Crawford advises her to give up smoking. Emily takes her in. Elsie has convulsions when she hears she owes her life to Hilda. Renee shows the Bannisters around the Corner Shop. Hilda is proclaimed a heroine. She makes the most of the situation and over-dramatises the events.
S21 E04Jul 28, 1980
28th July 1980 Jul 28, 1980 Alf refuses to take Renee out in the car again. Betty worries that if she alerts the authorities over the Fletchers their 'uncle' will take it out on them. Gail isn't keen on Peterloo Place. The Post Master tells Alf he can have the sub-post office. The Roberts celebrate. They go to a country pub. As he's been drinking, Alf lets Renee drive home. Betty phones the NSPCC about the Fletchers. Bert and Ivy look at 15 Peterloo Place and think the house is a bargain. Gail tells Brian to make an offer on the house. The Roberts get lost in the country, Renee stalls the car at some roadworks in a narrow lane. Alf gets out to take over but suddenly a lorry comes down the lane and hits the car head on. After the crash, Alf looks into the car and sees Renee lying across the seat, eyes fixed open.

30th July 1980 Jul 30, 1980 Police and ambulancemen arrive at the crash site. Renee is rushed to hospital. Alf goes with her and is breathalysed. The crystals turn green. Renee undergoes emergency surgery but she dies in the theatre. Her spleen and her liver were both ruptured. The next morning, the news of Renee's death shocks the residents. Alf doesn't know what to do about anything. P.C. White makes him go over the accident for their report. The driver of the lorry has a broken leg and concussion and Renee's PM is set for this morning. The NSPCC make an appointment to see Betty. The Willow Crescent Estate salesman calls on the Tilsleys and tells them he has a cheaper house to offer them for £13,000 with repayments at under £100 a month. Brian doesn't want to know but Gail is keen. The house is vacant but only has the one bedroom. Alf begins to break down. Ken tries to comfort him.

4th August 1980 Aug 4, 1980 Alf blames himself for letting Renee drive. He is upset as he can't remember what she looked like when she smiled. Hilda buys a new hat for Renee's funeral and tells Stan and Eddie one of them will have to accompany her. Betty controls her grief by looking after the shop for Alf. Daisy Hibbert arrives and puts a strain on Alf by demanding all the grief for herself. Inspector Vaughn - an NSPCC official - visits Betty. She tells him about the Fletchers' neglect and her fears for the children. She is assured her name will be kept out of the investigation. Daisy discovers Alf was breathalysed and had a blood test. She believes he killed Renee.

6th August 1980 Aug 6, 1980 Stan refuses to go to the funeral so Eddie has to. Annie, Elsie, Ivy, Betty, Ken, Mike, Hilda and Eddie attend, along with Alf and Renee's family. Renee is cremated. The Fletchers' "uncle", Reg Sudworth turns on Betty, realising she reported him. He calls her interfering and threatens her. Mike and Eddie walk in on them in the Corner Shop and scare Sudworth off. Ivy takes care of the catering at the funeral tea. P.C. White calls and tells Alf that his blood test was negative. Alf gives Daisy Hibbert a photograph of Renee and him. She tears him off the picture and accuses him of murdering her baby.

Arnold is obviously mentally disturbed and frightens Emily. He tells her they must be together in the next life as well as this life. Emily threatens to call the police if he doesn't leave her. He physically stops her from leaving the house. He tells her he knows God wants them to die. She tells him she is not prepared to die. Wally Randle takes Elsie on the town. Sonia Price starts Yoga and Beauty classes at the Community Centre. Arnold urges Emily to pray with him before they commit suicide. She begs him to let her go. He demands to see her Bible. She tells him it's in her bedroom. As he goes upstairs she runs out of the house. She finds Len passing outside and hysterically tells him that Arnold is inside. Len checks but Arnold has already left by the back door.

1st April 1981 Apr 1, 1981 Stan, Eddie and Hilda spend the morning searching through the tip for their washing. They give up as there are thousands of identical bags on the tip. Hilda is distraught. Ron Sykes has told Brian that due to the recession there will be no more overtime. Len offers Richard Dickinson a 50p rise instead of £1 demanded. Mike apologises to Deirdre for taking her for granted. She still maintains that their relationship is over. Eddie organises a whip-round for the Ogdens but the residents are reluctant to chip in. Len and Richard settle on a 65p pay rise and Richard calls off the strike. Brian tells Bert he's fed up with Gail being tired all the time, bills, mortgage and a crying baby. He upsets Ivy by saying he wishes he'd never married. Deirdre invites Ken for a meal. He accepts. Annie gives Hilda some spare blankets. Fred admits to Betty he'd like to marry Eunice.

29th April 1981 Apr 29, 1981 Elsie can't believe she was so drunk as to spend the night with Bill Fielding. He insists on staying for his breakfast and is upset when he tells her he must have been desperate to have picked her up. His wife Muriel turns up when he's on his own. She thinks Elsie is his regular tart. Annie tells Fred she wants an extra £10 a week if Eunice is to live in. Fred and Eunice set the date for 13th May. Elsie returns home to find the house is ruins and all her clothes cut to shreds by Muriel.

25th May 1981 May 25, 1981 Beattie Pearson arrives. She congratulates Ken on his engagement but doesn't think much of Deirdre as she's divorced. The Gees return from honeymoon. Eunice starts bossing Fred around and makes herself at home in the Rovers. Beattie looks through Albert's Post Office account. Albert complains to her that she hasn't seen him for six months. The Jacksons and Tilsleys have a picnic. Colin flirts with Gail but Brian thinks he's harmless. Albert accuses Beattie of wanting something. She tells him she wants to know what arrangements Ken has made for him. Eunice starts to take over the Rovers and Annie doesn't like it. Beattie accuses Ken of abandoning Albert. He suggests she takes him in but she says she hasn't the room. Knowing Brian is at work, Colin calls on Gail. He makes a pass at her, telling her he fancies her. She says she doesn't fancy him and slaps his face when he comes on strong.

17th June 1981 Jun 17, 1981 Eddie and Stan tell Hilda all about the strippers at the Social Club but Hilda is adamant that Stan spent the night with Freda Woods at the Legion. Hilda washes her hands of Stan and tells him she's not feeding him anymore. Fred gets a letter from the brewery saying he can't have a pub. Hilda goes to the Legion to see Freda and accuses her of having an affair with Stan. Freda doesn't remember who walked her home on the night in question. Gladys Turnbull tells Rita that she and her husband have decided to take the baby on themselves. Rita wishes her well. Hilda tells Stan he's a fool to see other women. She realises he's weak. He promises not to be weak again. Elsie searches for a job. Bert's dole is cut as he's been claiming for over six months. Eddie takes Freda to the Rovers. She doesn't recognise Stan and upsets Hilda by saying she'd have to be desperate to spend the night with him. Fred swears to Eunice he'll find out why they've been turned down. Len tells Rita they should look into fostering. She agrees

Alf gives Deirdre away, Len is best man, Emily is Matron of Honour, Tracy and Susan are bridesmaids. Eunice's friend Ronnie gets Fred a labouring job. Annie lays on a wedding spread in the Select. Deirdre is touched when Ray Langton sends a telegram wishing her luck. Frank Pritchard rings Annie and says he's found another job. She is furious. The Barlows leave for honeymoon in Corfu.

Ken gets Albert out of the house before laying into Deirdre. Deirdre apologises for hurting Ken but he tells her it's too late for her to be sorry. Suzie starts doing more work than usual as Annie returns from visiting Joan. Fred is annoyed as Annie still treats the Rover as if it was hers. Ken wants to know Deirdre's plans and accuses her of being selfish. She accuses him of never wanting her, just someone to clean up after him. Albert feels in the way at No.1 as the Barlows row. Deirdre accuses Ken of tolerating her and it feels as if they've been married for twenty years. Mike calls on Deirdre. She tells him Ken knows, she has to stop Ken from hitting Mike whilst he drags her away from Mike, nearly hitting her in the process. Fred tackles Annie for petrol money but she ignores him. Ken calls Deirdre calculating and tells her she's killed their marriage; she must pack and get out.

4th May 1983 May 4, 1983 Bet and Betty are stranded in the Rover in the middle of a lake. Fred wades out to the car but can't start it. Annie tries to cope alone at the Rovers with a lot of complaining customers. Suzie finds Terry Goodwin in No.11. He tells her he's sorry he hit her. She tries to phone the police but he has cut the phone wires. He tells her he loves her and doesn't understand why she's such a cow. He threatens to kill himself if she doesn't return. Fred carries Bet and Betty to land. Bet is furious when he sits her down on a cowpat. Terry packs Suzie's things but she refuses to leave. Elsie arrives and gets Suzie to run out and get help. She gets Eddie and Alf to come to Elsie's aid. They find she has dealt with him already. Terry tells Suzie he'll leave her alone and admits defeat. Fred, Betty and Bet return in a taxi, cold and haggard. Fred blames Brian but Annie rules that as he took the car without the mechanic's consent he is to blame for everything. Fred tells Brian he wants the car brought back free of charge.

He feels Pamela Mitchell has changed his words and worries that the piece will get him into trouble. Annie puts Suzie onto a job at the "Lord Nelson". The female customers upset Bet by laughing at the idea of video-dating. Hilda worries about her brother Archie Crabtree's health. Bet visits the "Bill & Coo Video Dating Agency" run by Margot Sutcliffe. She views the videos of the agency's men. Alf doesn't like Ken's article and accuses him of having a go at all Councillors now. Bet is startled to find Jack Duckworth on the video, calling himself Vince St. Clair. Suzie gets the job at the Nelson. Hilda is upset as Archie dies of a heart attack. She is now the only one left in her family. Stan comforts her.

25th May 1983 May 25, 1983 Mavis fears that she'll never see Victor when he moves. Vera arranges to meet Jack at the Rovers, through the "agency". The Ogdens go to the chip shop and tell Avril Carter that as Archie's next of kin the chip shop is theirs. Hilda is amazed at the amount of money taken over the counter. Avril throws them out, threatening them with the police. Victor secures the cottage and arranges to transfer his work to Saddleworth. Vera dons a red wig to pose as "Carole Munro". Jack dresses up in his "Vince St. Clair" outfit to meet her. On seeing that Carole is really Vera, he is horrified as all the Rovers' regulars look on and laugh. Vera chases him out of the pub, attacking him with her handbag. Victor tells Mavis the cottage is big enough for two. He invites her to join him on a trial marriage.

27th June 1983 Jun 27, 1983 Trevor and Damian Ogden visit the Ogdens. Stan demands to know what Trevor wants. Trevor asks them to look after Damian for the night whilst he attends a job interview. Brian tells Gail that Suzie tried to get him into bed. He tells her he threw Suzie out. Bet challenges the Rovers' men to lose weight. Eddie, Stan, Fred and Alf agree to put £5 each in a kitty and the winner to take all. Fred slips bags of coins from the till into his pocket for the first weigh-in. Gail tells Suzie they're no longer friends. Suzie says that Brian led her on and persuaded her to sleep with him. Elsie reveals she saw Suzie in her bed at midnight. Gail is relieved. Stan is certain Trevor is after Archie's money. Hilda is upset that he thinks so little of his son. Elsie tells Suzie she's not welcome in her house anymore. Elsie slaps her face when she brings up her old flames and also calls her "a slag".

12th October 1983 Oct 12, 1983 Emily is flattered when Percy flirts with her. Mavis bakes a cake with a mystery ingredient in it. Annie and Hilda also bake cakes. Fred is amazed to find Miss Weatherfield selling kisses at the Fayre. Marion tells Winifred Willis about the wedding and she takes the news well. Elsie guesses that Marion is pregnant. She tells her that she's very happy for her. Rita runs the Bring and Buy stall, Mavis the cake stall, Vera the bingo stall and Percy the jumble. Eddie decides he'd like Hilda to know about the baby from him rather than hear from anyone else. Hilda is thrilled when the Deputy Mayoress, Mrs Winters buys Hilda's cake. Gail is sad when she has to start packing the house up. Albert guesses that the mystery ingredient in Mavis' cake is sage. When she gives him the cake he refuses to take it as only a fool would eat a cake with sage in. Victor is horrified when his pottery ends up on the plate-smashing stall. Eddie tells Hilda that Marion is pregnant; she is disappointed in them but also pleased for them

Terry tells him he doesn't fancy her and advises him to build a few muscles to impress her. Bill tells Elsie he doesn't want to be lonely any more - he's been lonely for her for years. She doesn't think she can give everything up on a whim. The Ogdens move Stan's bed into the sitting room. The police warn Fred that his tyres are bald. Sharon gets Curly to carry her bags to the station, telling him she's returning to Sheffield. Elsie decides she's wasted enough of her life and she should grasp her opportunity to escape. Bill is delighted when she phones his hotel to say she's on her way to him in London. Elsie packs. She takes her photographs of Linda and Dennis and, posting her keys at the Barlows' house and remembering old times, leaves the Street for ever.

Mavis complains that there's too much chutney in the Rovers' sandwiches. Billy is annoyed and bars her from the pub as well. Rita tells Mavis she'll pay for her flat to be decorated if she'll take driving lessons. Mavis agrees. Hilda receives a bank statement and discovers Stan has withdrawn £40. She accuses Stan of stealing the money but he is adamant that it was his money. She tries to make him see they'll need the money to live on soon. Billy tries to make up with Deirdre but she refuses to speak to him. Alf stands by Deirdre and bars him from the shop.

25th April 1984 Apr 25, 1984 Curly and Elaine Pollard spend the night together in the boat when it breaks down. Emily is upset with Curly when he finally arrives home because he didn't phone her beforehand to say that he was safe. He is touched that someone worries about him. A TV detector van roams the area. Bill finds someone has stolen all the lead off the chapel roof. He calls in the police. The police tell Emily they're surprised she employed Bill in the first place. Jack panics when the detector van calls in the Street. He tries to stop the family watching the TV but the detector operators call anyway. Vera swears she gave Jack the money to buy the licence but discovers he kept the money instead.

Wed Jan 2 1985 Feb 27, 1985 Sally resigns from the Weatherfield Recorder, the Gazette having offered her a job. The Gazette reports on Mavis' win. She grows hysterical. Henry Wakefield tells Hilda he's starting afresh away from Weatherfield. Ken realises Sally got the job at the Gazette because of Mavis' story. He tells her to leave the Recorder immediately. A reporter, Jim Lomax, from the Nationals calls on Mavis. He frightens her into giving him her side of the story.

3 April 1985 Apr 3, 1985 Brian refuses to view a house that Gail is keen on. Mavis is delighted when Ken asks her to join the Rovers' quiz team. Gail packs and gets Kevin to drive her and Nicky to Audrey's in Cadishead. Hilda has a wonderful time at the Lowthers'. She returns home to find she's been burgled. Her bill money, £8.50 is taken and the house is vandalised. Wilf Starkey joins the quiz team. Brian returns home to find Gail has left. Ivy breaks down.

17 April 1985 Apr 17, 1985 Ivy is furious that Brian spent the night in a club. The Duckworths celebrate their twenty-eighth wedding anniversary. Terry and Curly go halves on the car. Brian plans another night out and tells Ivy he's single again. The White Swan team are made up of professionals. Bet worries about the Rovers' reputation. The car breaks down and Curly has to run to the Rovers to be in time for the quiz. Terry realises Jack knew the engine was knackered and it'll cost a fortune to repair. Stella Rigby is put out when the Rovers take a lead over the White Swan. Percy gets the deciding question on sport wrong and the Rovers lose the quiz. He is sorry but everyone shuns him. Ivy packs Brian's bag and tells him to leave.

1 July 1985 Jul 1, 1985 Betty takes command of the Rovers whilst Bet holidays. In Blackpool, Mavis is embarrassed when men whistle at Bet. Rita finds herself caught in the middle of their bickering. Bet and Rita ensnare a couple of reps. Mavis meets up with Norris Birchall who shares her taste in literature. Rita is embarrassed by the youthful age of her rep, Glenn Pritchard. Bet flirts heavily with hers - Wally Trainer. Norris turns out to be the reps' boss. Kevin and Michelle babysit with Nicky. Michelle worries that Kevin is getting too serious.

Rita rows with him for wrecking her car and nearly killing Jenny. She tells him to stay out of Jenny's life. Jenny is upset. Alf decides to inform the Police about finding the box. Hilda is upset that she's involved. Martin calls on Jenny in secret. She wants to continue seeing him but he thinks that she's too much trouble. She convinces him that they have to see each other until the Police stop their enquiries. Kevin hates seeing Hilda worried and tells Terry that he has to do something; for Hilda's sake. Terry tells Alf he broke into the shop. He apologises and tells him that he was drunk and says he'll pay for all the damage. Alf still feels the Police should be brought in.

She tells him about the car crash and how Jenny covered up for Martin speeding. Knowing that Alan has an aggressive streak, Martin worries when he hears of his return. Hilda is hurt that Terry lied to her over the break-in and tells him that she's disappointed in him. Alf decides not to report Terry to the Police but refuses to tell the Duckworths as he wants to make them sweat. Alan goes for Martin, accusing him of nearly killing Jenny. Jenny breaks down and confesses that she was driving the car.

He drags Jenny and Martin to the police station and makes them tell the truth. Gail tells Audrey that she doesn't want Ian Latimer to know anything about the baby. The Police give Jenny and Martin a dressing-down, listing the offences they have committed. They are frightened when they are threatened with legal action. Vera gives Alf £100 to not call the Police. He takes the money before telling the Duckworths that he's not pressing charges. The Police agree to drop the crash-case if Rita won't press charges. She agrees to drop the whole matter. Alan swears that he'll give her the £1,500 he earned in Dubai in compensation. Audrey writes to Ian, telling him about Gail's pregnancy and divorce.

He refuses to give her discount just because she's his daughter; he knows Mike will be paying. Gail realises that she was happy being married to Brian and now feels abandoned. She doesn't know what's to become of her. Mike refuses to let Susan spend another £200 on advertising, telling her that she's over budget. Susan feels that both Ken and Mike are pathetic for not having faith in her. Alan entertains Rita at his hotel. He tells her that he's not going back to Dubai and asks her to marry him. She tells him that she doesn't want to commit herself to marriage again. She wants to go on as they are. He doesn't understand; he didn't think she could be choosy as she's getting on. She is hurt.

Rita feels that Alan has a cheek when she learns from Mavis that Alan is going to return to Dubai and expects her to look after Jenny. She accuses Alan of taking her for granted. She tells him that she likes looking after Jenny as she makes her feel young. He apologises to her for upsetting her and is relieved when she finds the situation amusing. Susan has her photograph taken presenting the fire children with Hopscotch clothes. She gives Ken the picture and a covering article, telling him it's a human interest story. She tells him that one of the children led the family to safety through the flames. Ken is interested as the Gazette did not mention this. Rita tells Alan that she loves him but wants to keep her independence. She tells him if he doesn't return to Dubai she'd like him to move in with her at No.7. Gail is stunned when Ian Latimer arrives on her doorstep.

He arrives with two friends and a scuffle breaks out, however, when the police arrive Joe accuses Don of assaulting him. Ivy is worried when Don fails to arrive home. Ken and Wendy argue when explains to her that he will have to sell his paper to pay Deirdre off. He is embarrassed when he arrives at home to discover that Deirdre has changed the locks and he can't get in. Eddie asks Tina to go to France with him. Alec phones his daughter and asks her and the family round to dinner. Mike's accountant tell shim that he'll have to start up the business again from scratch if he wants to make money.

Bet guesses that Vicky is at the Ardens' house. She finds Steve and her asleep at the house. They swear they didn't get up to anything. The ambulance takes twenty-five minutes to arrive for Liz. Raquel breaks down and tells Curly that she's finished with modelling and is homeless. Curly comforts her. Vicky tells Bet she knows she's been having an affair with Des Foster. Steve is appalled to discover he's caused Liz to go into premature labour. Bet tells Vicky that she wanted to make Alec jealous with Des but it backfired. She swears she wasn't unfaithful and Vicky believes her. Liz gives birth to a premature baby girl. She names her Katherine and realises she has little chance of survival. Jim is heartbroken. Raquel stays at No.7. Doctor Swann tells the McDonalds their baby's chances are not good.

14 February 1992 Feb 14, 1992 Steve receives a Valentine from Vicky in Lancaster. Deirdre sets up a bed in the living room for Ken. Alf is sent a Valentine from 'Britannia' (an allusion to Vivian Barford but in reality Steve and Tracy). Audrey pretends to be furious and consoles herself by going shopping. Reg is delighted to receive a Valentine from Rita, unaware that Steve sent it. Rita is horrified when he comes on strong. Angela Hawthorne agrees to see Derek about a job, upsetting Mavis. Cherie Watkins calls on Alec. Bet introduces herself as Alec's mother and starts bossing 'little Alec' around. Alec is forced to explain that he is not a widower - Cherie is not amused. Mavis tells Derek she can't stand the thought of him spending every day with Angela. He tells her this may be his last chance to get a job, causing Mavis to say he must see Angela. Paula Maxwell thanks Andy for his card and gives him one in return. He is pleased. Derek goes to Hawthorne's but decides not to see Angela, telling Mavis their marriage is more important than work. Rita tells Reg she did not send him the Valentine. Deirdre is full of doubts as Ken is delivered to her from hospital.

27 May 1992 May 27, 1992 Vera refuses to let anything spoil the day for her. Raquel does Lisa's hair and makeup. At St. Mary's, Terry is handcuffed to a Prison Officer for the service. Deirdre is concerned when Emily attempts to buy baby food at the shop, claiming she is momentarily confused. Don and Ivy joins the Duckworths and Hortons at the wedding. Vera pleads with the prison officer and persuades him to take the handcuffs off Terry for the ceremony. Terry takes his opportunity for freedom whilst the photographs are being taken and runs away. The officers give chase but he's too quick. Lisa is horrified. The Hortons and the Duckworths row over Terry's disappearance. The officers suspect Vera of planning the episode. Lisa refuses to return to Blackpool, insisting that she wants to stay near the Duckworths. The officers warn the Duckworths to tell them when Terry makes contact. Derek applies for every job he can in order to get away from Mavis's rule. Lisa is scared about what's going to happen.

Kevin is annoyed that Sally has bought expensive glasses for Mike and Alma. She is furious when he accidentally drops them. Ken gives Alma a bottle of champagne and wishes her well. Mike is relieved when Alma turns up just in time. She lets him sweat before agreeing to marry him. Gail, Martin, Sally, Kevin, Bet, Alec, Alf and Audrey witness the wedding. Don decides he's going to leave Ivy. He is annoyed when Julie tells him it makes no difference to her feelings. She refuses to be bullied by him. She tells him she doesn't believe he'll leave Ivy completely. She urges him to go back to Ivy and forget about her. She wants him out of her life. Alec drops Sally's present again, Kevin stops her telling him it was already broken and Alec gives her £30 to replace it. Alma tells Mike she married him because she wanted to; she understands him completely now and she's not scared of him anymore. She tells him he'll never be able to lie to her again. Don feels he should have never returned to Ivy in the first place. He feels he's got nothing left. Julie tells him that if his life is wrecked then he wrecked it, not Ivy, God or her. He is stunned and tells her she's right, but he still loves her. Ivy worries about Don's whereabouts. Don speeds along country roads without caring for his safety. He misses a bend and crashes the car.

Derek realises that Rita will return to work after Ted's death and he'll be job hunting again. Don leaves hospital. With Frank Haskins' help he moves into the Wentworths Guest House at 191 Ashdale Road. Landlady Eileen Wentworth takes charge of him. Mr Steele, the health inspector, calls at the Rovers to check the kitchens are still clean. He tells Liz she must wear a hat in the kitchen. During his inspection, Alec sees the spider in the kitchen and is forced to catch it in his hand and squash it. Curly contacts Cupid's Arrow Introduction Bureau to make an appointment. Ivy can't believe Don hasn't returned home, she feels he must be with Julie. Frank tells her he's in a bedsit.

9 September 1992 Sep 9, 1992 Lisa's labour pains start and she does the housework between contractions. She summons Vera from work and they go into hospital together. Lisa keeps calm but Vera is a nervous wreck. Jack is glad he's found Don again and they're still mates. Carmel takes every opportunity to babysit at the Platts' house. As Lisa isn't dilating beyond 4cm and the baby is tiring, she has a caesarian with an epidural. Vera sits with her in the theatre, taking her mind off things by chatting about her family. The residents watch Percy play Cyril Jukes at bowls. Phyllis cheers him on. Lisa gives birth to a son, she calls him Tom. Cyril beats Percy to Alf's relief. Jack and Vera become emotional at the sight of their grandson. At the match, Rita finds Ted asleep on a bench at the bowls match but then realises he's dead. The residents come to her aid as she weeps, cradling his head in her arms.

Derek is called as witness for the Brookes' against Rita as he witnessed Ted's will. He is distraught that he's being involved. Lisa and Des find a terrace in Withington with a large garden and decide to put an offer in on it. Some first-time buyers are interested in No.6. Doug arranges to meet Tracy to get his money back. Tracy lets Debbie Dawson believe that she's seeing Doug as his girlfriend. Derek worries that he'll have to tell the court about Ted's slurred speech. Curly tells Angie that he doesn't want her to leave and he'll try harder. She is relieved and agrees to stay, saying she'll keep her personal life away from the house. Tracy apologises to Maggie and is forgiven. Tracy is thrilled when Maggie gives her her job back. Ken is pleased everything's been sorted out. Alma tells Mike that Mark is always welcome at the flat. Doug invites Deirdre out for a posh meal. Angie is annoyed when Curly buys her red wine as she knows he knows the effect it has on her. She realises that she doesn't trust him and is going to have to move out. Lisa buys a bottle of wine at the Rovers to celebrate getting a buyer for the house. Vera is in the pub but refuses to talk to her. She steps out of the Rovers and drops her purse in the Street. As she bends to pick it up she is hit by a car driven by John Hargreaves. Doug and Des witness the accident. Des cradles Lisa as she lies unconcious in the Street. Vera and Jack are stunned to see Lisa lying there.

Carmel accuses her of thinking she's a liar but leaves when Sally takes David back and demands she leaves. Gail is shaken when Sally summons her. Sally feels they should bring the Police in so Gail tells her that Carmel is obsessed with Martin and that she's saying her baby is his. Gail is determined that Carmel isn't going to wreck her marriage. Reg tells Maureen he wants to take her out again. Denise is surprised when Neil says he can't wait to divorce her. Gail calls on Carmel at her bedsit. Carmel denies trying to take David. Carmel tells her that she started everything by inviting her into her house; she willed Carmel to take Martin off her. Carmel suggests Gail sees a psychiatrist. Neil tells Angie he's finished with Denise and wants to make a fresh start with her as mates. She refuses as she knows she couldn't trust herself. Carmel pleads with Gail to let Martin leave. Gail shoves her off her, Carmel falls down a flight of stairs and lies on the floor, groaning and clutching her stomach.

2 April 1993 Apr 2, 1993 Reg meets elderly, wheelchair-bound Maud Grimes again for the first time in many years but tries to deceive her by getting Maureen to introduce him as 'Norman Watts'. Phyllis is jealous of Percy's involvement with Olive Clarke. Maud finds her glasses and suddenly recognises Reg and is furious that he's in her house. She refuses to believe he's any different to how he used to be. Ken takes the Redmans to Brittany. Vicky returns for Easter with her friend Gabriella Lloyd-Williams. Vera advertises the Nova for sale in the local paper but no one shows any interest. Steve is put out that Vicky has brought a friend for the holidays but Vicky assures him she'll get rid of her. Maud feels Maureen is a fool to take up with Reg again. She wheels over his foot in her wheelchair. Maureen feels it might be for the best if she gets out of Reg's life again. Des tells Vera he's going to have to tell the truth in court. Vera tells him the truth is he killed Lisa.

30 April 1993 Apr 30, 1993 Alf refuses to sell up the Corner Shop, feeling Audrey only wants to spend his money. Reg feels that Maud will always stop him and Maureen from consummating their love. He tells Maureen they'll take the afternoon off and spend it in his flat. Percy spruces himself up to be with Olive Clarke. He tells her she's a handsome woman. Phyllis accuses Olive of chasing Percy because his picture was in the magazine. The McDonalds celebrate when Richard Willmore accepts them as trainee managers. Jack is sickened. Derek sets about refitting the stockroom light. Mavis feels he'll electrocute himself. Derek is puzzled when water drips through his drill hole. Hanif is pleased when Denise lets him kiss her. The Wiltons realise the water is coming from Reg's flat and fears he might be ill and have left the bath running. They rush to the flat and bang on the door. Reg and Maureen are stopped from making love and Maureen is caught up in the bed as the water gushes out of it. Reg is furious to discover Derek has drilled into the water bed. Doug has no rent for the Duckworths, telling them he's got a car deal on and they'll have the rent soon. Maureen feels humiliated and refuses to have anything to do with Reg anymore.

2 July 1993 Jul 2, 1993 Steve refuses to have Jim in court with him in case he mouths off. Alf is emotional on his last day. He takes the bacon slicer home as a momento. Curly is sick of Elaine Fenwick's incompetence. Don explains to Jack that he only shares the house with Ivy. Jim is upset that Steve doesn't want him at the court case. Alf throws a farewell party at the Rovers. Audrey is aghast when Vivian Barford tells him that he's been made an honorary life member of WART's. Jack and Vera are relieved when Alf leaves without mentioning their slate. Rita gives a speech and Betty makes a cake in the shape of the shop. Alf takes his overall home from the shop, overcome.

5 July 1993 Jul 5, 1993 Brendan Scott starts at the Corner Shop and changes the sign to "Best Buys". He insists on formality between himself and Deirdre and plans on changing the shop's stock. Jim insists on going to court. Brendan refuses Phyllis credit and tells her that he's stopping all such schemes. Reg tells Curly that he will be on the interview board for the manager's job. The court hearing is transferred for a hearing at the Crown Court but this might take a year to be heard. Jack invites Don to a game of cards at Curly's house. Derek is not given the position or title of "Head" Caretaker due to cuts but he will get an "auxilliary". Vera pops into the corner shop where Brendan tells her that he bought their debt to Alf. She owes him £220 and he wants it by the end of the week.

7 July 1993 Jul 7, 1993 Jack worries about his debt. Curly tells him that Brendan would probably have bought it off Alf at half the amount. Brendan puts all his prices up and Ken's rent up at the same time. Carol Copeland starts under Derek as assistant caretaker, telling him that she's not happy about moving from cleaning. Mavis doesn't like the idea of Derek working with a woman, certain that she will find him attractive. Jack tricks Alf into telling him that he sold the debt to Brendan for £75. Jack tells Brendan that he'll pay him £2 a week for thirty-seven weeks to pay the debt off. Brendan refuses to accept it, demanding the full £220 so Jack tells him that there's nothing a court will do to help; he's offered to pay and his money has been refused. Brendan is furious. Curly worries when he discovers that Elaine Fenwick knows all the board members personally. Des kids Jack that Brendan will set the heavies on him but Jack believes him. The board fire difficult questions at Curly. He is amazed when Reg demands the answer to a complicated question about seeing off rivals. Audrey tries to get Alf to spend £800 on a Spanish holiday but he keeps an eye on his money now. Reg tells Maureen he couldn't live in her house and they should sell both properties and buy something new. Curly accuses Reg of putting the boot in but Reg explains that the other board members had decided the job was Elaine's. He says that he had to ask the question to prove to the others he was right for the job. Vera is horrified when a stranger appears in the Rovers after talking to Brendan. Thinking that he's after Jack, she threatens him with a bottle but Des stops her; the stranger is his brother Colin.

Mon Jan 3 1994 Jan 26, 1994 Reg panics as his best man Eric Firman is too laid back about the wedding. Maud tells Maureen that she'll be civil to Reg now he's going to be part of the family. Maureen is overcome when Maud gives her an antique cameo brooch to wear. Des takes Raquel to the wedding. Reg fears Maureen will jilt him but she arrives, being given away by brother-in-law Clive Phillips. Charlie and Bet are late for the wedding and arrive in his lorry. Reg and Maureen are married at St. Christopher's. The reception is at the Belstaff Hotel and Reg's speech is full of his love for Maureen. He tells everyone the shop will be opening Sundays. Sally asks Emily for the picture back, explaining it was a gift from Percy. Mike is amazed when Steve offers him a 50-50 partnership at the print shop, offering to put in the capital. Mike refuses so Steve tells him he'll just set himself up in competition. He goes for Steve but Steve threatens him with the police if he touches him. Raquel chats up the photographer, Ben Cunningham. Reg tells Clive that it should be his turn to look after Maud as Maureen's had her for years. Maud overhears them rowing, saying neither of them wants her. She wheels herself away from the hotel. Maureen refuses to leave for Paris until Maud is found. She's rescued but the flight has gone. Maureen is furious to learn Reg has been calling Maud a burden and forgives him and lets him into their room for their wedding night.

Rita is embarrassed to chase Sally for an unpaid paper bill. Sally gets upset and breaks down, explaining she's pregnant and Kevin will kill her. Curly interrogates ten-year old Jamie Armstrong after Ivy catches him shoplifting in Bettabuys. His mother Tricia begs Curly to be lenient. She makes it clear to Curly that she's separated from her husband. Derek becomes crazed, ripping all the wallpaper off the walls. He tells Mavis the room matches him - an empty shell devoid of all warmth and security. Ken prepares a mini-Thai banquet for Denise. She is nervous when he encourages her to talk about herself. Sally tells Kevin about the baby and is stunned when he walks out on her.

25 March 1994 Mar 25, 1994 Final appearance of Lynne Perrie as Ivy Brennan. Guilt-ridden Des creeps out of Tanya's flat in the morning. Reg accuses Maureen of being obsessed with Maud. She refuses to choose between them. Derek tries to sell to Emily only to find that Norris has beaten him to it and tried everyone on the Street. They agree to be more selective in future. Ivy and Audrey compete to see who can spoil Sarah the most. Martin is upset when Mandy Baker dies in hospital of an asthma attack. Mavis lets Norris and Derek flick through the newspaper book to find the wealthier residents. She is horrified when Rita catches them and throws them out. Des tells Tanya that he can't get her out of his mind but he can't destroy Raquel. He tells Tanya they can't do it again. Tanya tells him that she's Alex's lover and if he found out he'd lose his job. Raquel returns and is pleased to see Des. Maureen packs and returns to Maud's house, telling Reg that she can't bear to think of her alone.

20 May 1994 May 20, 1994 Jack refuses to come off the roof until he's freed Fergie. Curly and Andy try to ignore him. Derek tells Mavis he hasn't accepted Angela's job, or turned it down. Vera tells Jack she's proud of his stand but she leaves him on the roof to go to bingo. Nick tries to get Gail to buy him new trainers but she refuses. Jack ties himself to Curly's chimney stack. Curly opens the observatory window but Fergie still refuses to budge. After Jack's spent a night on the roof, Andy replaces the ladder. Vera celebrates when Fergie flies home but Jack can't move from the roof - his limbs have gone dead. Mavis is horrified to hear Derek begging Don for a job, cleaning taxis. She's upset by Derek's decline. Vera calls the fire brigade and they get Jack down. The Gazette arrive and interview Vera who blames Curly for everything. Mavis is forced to suggest Derek takes Angela's job to stop him wasting away. He phones Angela and is taken on as one of her sales team. Mavis is stunned when he reveals Angela's husband has now left her.

29 June 1994 Jun 29, 1994 Des is still ranting to Alex, telling him to leave - Alex doesn't realise what is going on. Unseen by Des, Raquel arrives and hears everything. The poker game at Curly's is still going on. Raquel runs to the Rovers, gets Bet out of bed and tells her everything. Meanwhile Alex is getting ready to leave and is calling Tanya names. He and Des start fighting, it continues in the cafe. When Alex leaves Des thinks that it's all okay but Tanya tells him its all over and that he has ruined everything. Des leaves. Bet lets Raquel stay the night and the next day she tells her Tanya is sacked and Des is barred. Alma and Gail arrive at the cafe - Alma goes to see Tanya and tells her she has to leave even though she and Alex have split up. Bet and Raquel go to collect her clothes - Des isn't there. Charlie arrives at the Rovers before Bet can talk to him properly. Tanya arrives - she insists that Bet talk to her. She tells her that she and Alex have finished, that its Des' fault, that he blackmailed her and hit her. Raquel believes it all - Bet still has her doubts.

19 September 1994 Sep 19, 1994 Samir starts work at The Casablanca, Deirdre fears they'll never see each other. She admits she borrowed the money for his fare and he swears to pay it all back. Bet is furious with Charlie for telling Tanya about Raquel's misfortune. He tells her she shouldn't have sacked Tanya. Mavis keeps her nude picture at The Kabin as she doesn't want Derek to see it. Alma tells Tanya she saw her upset Raquel and if she misses one rent payment she'll be evicted. Derek sees the picture when Rita views it, he tells Mavis it isn't very good as it looks more like a man than a woman. Tanya tries to put her side to Bet but Bet refuses to listen, upsetting Charlie who is convinced Tanya did not mean any malice. Bet throws her out. Charlie tells Bet he hates the way she treats people, him included. Don tells Nicky he's welcome to stay as long as he obeys the house rules. He tells Nick that Brian hated smoking as it wrecks health. Curly cooks Raquel a meal and tries to buck her up, telling her she's due some good luck. She thanks him for being a good friend. Charlie calls on Tanya, telling her she feels bad about her sacking. Tanya tells him how Bet uses people until she's tired of them. She encourages him to kiss her so he does. Raquel falls asleep after her meal. Curly tucks her up on the sofa. Charlie carries Tanya into the bedroom.

26 September 1994 Sep 26, 1994 Bet tells the Rovers' staff that Charlie is working away in Hamburg. She can't face the public, fearing they'll all have guessed. She tells Raquel how Tanya got back at her by stealing her man. She feels humiliated and Raquel tries to comfort her. Mike offers Kevin work chauffeuring. Band manager Marcus Saunders gives Steve a huge order to make merchandise for a UK tour. Steve bluffs his way through the deal, saying he can handle it. Don tells Gail he'll tell Nicky he's working nights and then he'll have to return home. To bring Bet out of herself, Raquel suggests a tips contest. Jack joins them. Steve works out he needs £20,000 to clinch the deal. Don tells Nicky he'll have to go home as he's working nights. The barstaff rush around trying to please the customers for tips. Roger Crompton has tea with the Wiltons and feels for Mavis, married to insensitive Derek. Raquel and Bet draw equal in the tips contest. After hours they spend the winnings on cocktails. Raquel smokes to practice for modeling and gives Bet tips on walking gracefully. She shows Bet her way of keeping hated people's names in the knife drawer and Bet writes out a whole list to put in the drawer.

Ken asks Mike if he can buy No.1 for his new family but Mike is jealous of his son and tells him he intends to rent the house out. The Duckworths are stunned when Cliff's wife Elsie turns up to collect him. Vera is hurt that he led her on, telling her he'd married a Vera whilst Jack worries Elsie will get all his money. Vera feels her Duckworth is better than Elsie's. Raquel and Curly throw an engagement party. Des decides at the last minute to attend. Derek stuffs himself with food behind Mavis' back. Raquel is astonished when Des tells her she mustn't marry Curly as it would be a mistake. She tries to ignore him but he keeps at her, telling her she doesn't love Curly. He asks her to marry him instead. She explodes and tells Curly to throw him out but realises he's right; she doesn't love Curly. She tells Curly he's the nicest man in the world but she can't marry him.

1 March 1995 Mar 1, 1995 Reg realises he needs a more youthful appearance. He takes Curly with him as he goes to a hairdressers and has a £300 hairpiece fitted. Alf tells Audrey he saw Martin kissing a nurse but she thinks nothing of it. Reg is proud of his wig but only wears it at work. Jack is forced to babysit with Jamie whilst Tricia goes out with Curly. Jamie doesn't want to be with him either. Don takes Josie to the dogs. Jack is uneasy when Jamie tells him he's told his dad where he is. Jamie wins all his money off him at cards and then pretends to be his dad knocking at the door, scaring Jack. Andy learns the University bar staff get paid more than the Rovers' staff. He challenges Rodney but is told to wait for Bet's return.

8 March 1995 Mar 8, 1995 Fiona is furious when Sean tells her how he took Steve's money off him at the dogs. She tells Steve she can't trust him so she's moving out but he stops her by saying he had a meeting at the dogs with Nick Gerrity, manager of Costello's Club and he won money to give back to Sean. Mike backs him up in front of Fiona and then demands 100 free T-shirts in return. Alma delights in shocking Mike when she turns up in her new sports car. He is furious that she's bought a car without consulting him. Audrey warns Martin not to mess Gail about. Maureen's van breaks down coming back from the Cash and Carry. Reg and Curly see her and stop to help. Maureen drives back with Curly and the stock whilst Reg stays with the van. She pulls down the sun visor and the wig falls onto her lap. She thinks it's a spider and screams, running the car off the road. Mike accuses Jon of ripping Alma off. Maureen confronts Reg with the wig, delighting Maud who thinks he looks stupid in it. Maureen embraces him when he explains how he's fearful of losing his youth. Steve and Fiona are embarrassed when his credit card is cut up at an expensive restaurant.

8 May 1995 May 8, 1995 Martin and Gail are horrified to discover they're in the caravan next to the Duckworths. Percy erects the Union Jack outside No.3 to mark the fiftieth anniversary of VE-Day. Tracy grows despondent at the thought of life on dialysis and hates being dependant on Ken. Tricia is grateful when she's given bar work at the Rovers. Fiona worries about Denise's whereabouts. Jack doesn't enjoy being stuck in a field surrounded by children. Vera makes matters worse by volunteering him to babysit the Platt children. He gets them to play hide and seek with himself "hiding" miles away. The Wiltons are horrified to find Arthur the gnome missing. Derek assumes he's been stolen by Des or Steve. Gail begins to relax in the countryside. She tells Martin that she doesn't hate him just needs to be able to trust him. Phyllis, Percy and Betty reminisce about VE Day as a party breaks out in the Rovers. Pensioner Billy Williams calls, recreating a pub crawl fifty years ago. Alf lights a bonfire on the Red Rec. Vera worries when Jack stays out all afternoon and evening. He gets involved in a singsong at the local pub. Betty is startled to recognise Billy with whom she partied on VE night. Jack returns to the caravan site at midnight but can't locate his caravan.

2 June 1995 Jun 2, 1995 The police call on Deirdre and take her to the hospital, Samir having been found with a bad head injury on the canal bank. He is in intensive care, unconscious. Fiona is hurt that Steve doesn't seem to care about her safety. Steve is scared when the heavy returns to say he's from a debt collector who wants paying. Denise tells Fiona she'd like her to manage the Salon for her as she wants to stop work and spend time with Daniel. Fiona is thrilled. Billy takes Betty to the Ritz ballroom for a tea dance. She is uncomfortable when he suggests they have a foreign weekend away together. He urges her to be impulsive. Fiona is upset when Steve doesn't share her joy over her promotion. She slams out of the flat to spend the night at her parents' house. Steve asks Vicky for £5,000 but she refuses. Deirdre is stunned when the doctors tell her that Samir isn't going to recover. She gives her consent for his kidney to be taken for the operation. Ken comforts her.

11 October 1995 Oct 11, 1995 Rita isn't sure if she should invest in the Rovers or not. Although Des keeps standing her up, Maxine is still keen on him. Vera tries to find a job for Jack, fearing they'll soon be through the £30,000. Des decides to stop seeing Maxine as she's too much of a clinger. Vicky tells Steve she's renting a Quays flat. He is annoyed that she has done it without telling him when he wanted to buy rather than rent. Sarah Louise gets bored at home when Martin falls asleep, so she goes to have dinner with Don. Maxine doesn't like the way everyone accuses her of chasing Des. Mavis offers to take The Kabin off Rita's hands. The McDonalds apologise to each other, he accepts the flat and she agrees to open a joint bank account so he doesn't have to keep asking her for money. Rita asks Alf's advice. He poses the question that if the Rovers is such a success then why hasn't Bet any savings? Rita realises Bet is a bad risk to back. Des apologises to Vera over the house. She feels that it's a good job it fell through as the mortgage would have been huge. Des is surprised when Maxine tells him she knows he doesn't want a steady relationship and that's fine by her - she just wants to have fun. Bet gets the brewery to drop the price by £2,000 but Rita tells her she's not going through with it. Mavis is embarrassed when they start rowing in The Kabin. Bet accuses Rita of only having money because she married into it and Rita tells her she's jealous as she couldn't marry Len. They shout at each other, bringing up past hurts and knowing their friendship is over.

16 October 1995 Oct 16, 1995 Bet has a sleepless night and confides in Raquel that no one will lend her the money she needs. She feels she's had her day. Denise is annoyed that Ken has asked Rita to be Godmother without consulting her. Bet gives Betty a garter to wear for her wedding and she surprises everyone by trying it on behind the bar. Bet is pleased when Vicky turns up and apologises, telling her she's the closest to a mother she has. Bet feels patronised as Vicky explains her plan to buy her a small house for which Bet would pay a nominal rent and be around when she's needed. Bet rounds on her, pointing out she housed her rent-free for four years as she loved her. Vicky is bewildered by her reaction and calls her ungrateful. Bet publicly throws Vicky out of the Rovers before turning on all the customers and throwing them out. She closes the pub, stunning Betty and Raquel. Anne Malone complains to Reg that Leo has been sexually harassing her and has made advances towards her. Reg doesn't know how to deal with the complaint but makes a note of it. Don grows concerned about Bet and calls on her. He finds her with her bags packed. She tells him she's finished with Weatherfield and the Rovers so she's leaving. A taxi arrives but she has no idea where she's going.

Mon Jan 1 1996 Jan 17, 1996 Steve promises Vicky that he'll stay on the straight and narrow. Ken finds the police looking for Tricia. They explain that, in her absence from court, she's been sent to prison for a week by the magistrates and, if she isn't found, it could be longer. Ken fetches her from the Rovers. When she sees the police, Tricia tells Ken that he's a scumbag of a snitch. She is taken to prison for non-payment of her TV licence fine and for not attending court. Jamie is taken into care. Brian tells Denise that he loves her and can't bear the thought of her marrying Ken. He asks her to come away with him and live with him. Ken walks in on Brian telling Denise that he and Alison are finished. Ken asks Brian to stop upsetting Denise and to keep her out of his marriage problems. Denise is stunned when Brian explains that he can't as she is his lover. Ken hits Brian and throws him out. Denise swears the affair is over but Ken throws her out, telling her if she doesn't go he'll kill her. He refuses to let her take Daniel.

28 February 1996 Feb 28, 1996 Alma is stunned when Gail confides to her about her affair with Ian Latimer in 1986. Vera dons her airs and graces as Joyce starts work. Kelly is uncomfortable when a couple of friends drop by and think it's weird her working for Ken. Ken walks in on them all and isn't pleased. Josie asks for Vera's forgiveness but she accuses her of making a mockery out of religion. Kelly fears Ken will sack her but he just asks her to be more discreet in future. Anne tells Raquel she fears Andy will go off her just because she won't sleep with him. Raquel points out that if that's the case he's not worth having. Jim and Liz go to an Army reunion in Macclesfield and are stunned to find Johnny Johnson has a wife, Lucy. Alma cooks Mike a romantic meal and asks him if he loves her but he would rather talk about business. Jim overhears Johnny telling Liz he married Lucy as she looked like her. Johnny tells Jim that all the blokes fancied Liz. On the way Liz has enough of Jim's questions and admits she had a brief fling with Johnny. He accuses her of being a whore and sleeping with everyone. He thumps her and leaves her lying in a road.

8 April 1996 Apr 8, 1996 Derek uses a camcorder to record the transformation of the allotment. Roy takes charge as the menfolk - Jack, Bill, Fred, Martin, Alf, Gary and Billy set off to the races. With Des away for a few days Andy hopes to persuade Anne to stay the night at No.6. Roy refuses to drink with the others and spends his time working out a formula to win on the horses. He fancies betting on "Betty's Hot Shot". The others join him as they like the name. Maureen keeps breaking down at the shop. Liz gets recalled by The Hour Glass as the manager is no good. She is given the job. "Betty's Hot Shot" wins at 50-1, giving the men £250 each. Jack suggests they invest their winnings by buying the horse as it's a selling handicap. The trainer, Hilary Forrest tells them the horse has tons of potential. Roy pulls out of buying the horse but the others go for it. Jack bids on their behalf, unsure about what he's doing. Egged on by Maud, Maureen tells the customers about Reg leaving her. The men buy the horse for £2,600 guineas, costing their winnings plus £90 each. Hilary agrees to keep training him. Anne and Andy fall out when she takes Liz's side against violent Jim. She refuses to have dinner with him and goes home. The men are horrified when Roy tells them it costs £10,000 a year to keep a racehorse.

Jamie is sceptical when Tricia explains she may have a job by the time he returns from school. Rita explains to Kelly that she had no luck with Fred in getting Ashley's job back. Malcolm Fox gives evidence against Steve, and Vicky admits it was Steve's idea to give Fox the money. Mike interviews Tricia in the cafe and finally offers her a job so she can pay him his rent. Steve gives evidence declaring he had no knowledge of Vicky seeing Fox. Claire turns up unexpectedly to see Des and Fred reinstates Ashley. Judge Parrish passes sentence on Malcolm Fox, Steve and Vicky. Fox gets an extra twelve months on his sentence, Vicky a twelve month suspended sentence and Steve is sent to jail for two years.

26 July 1996 Jul 26, 1996 Liz asks Fiona to visit Steve and let him know she cares but Fiona refuses, saying she's not going to pretend there's a future for them. Tricia tells Sally she's pregnant with Terry's child and is desperate to find him as she feels sure he'll support her. When the conservatory is finished the Wiltons throw a little party to toast it in champagne. Nick accuses Audrey of spying on him. She tells him he's rude and she's had enough of him. Alec holds a talent night at the Rovers. Jack is aghast when all the contestants sing his Frank Sinatra numbers. Becky tells Des and Claire that if they're going on holiday she'd like to go with them. Des and Claire aren't keen. Nick leaves No.8, posting his keys through the letterbox. Percy brings his ukulele to the talent show, whilst Maxine goes down well dancing. Jack starts singing but someone pulls the plug from the PA system. Tricia asks Vera for Terry's address as she's pregnant but Vera refuses to believe her and calls her a slag. Tricia is upset and tells Vera she'll have an abortion.

18 October 1996 Oct 18, 1996 Having established that Maud is going to bingo, Maureen invites Bill round for the evening. Raquel starts work at the Imperial Hotel and starts to socialise with the other beauticians. Jack gets Jamie to agree to stop skiving school by threatening to withdraw the promise of his own pigeon. Ashley moves into No.5. Don tells him that now he has his rent money he doesn't need to work so many night shifts. Ashley is disappointed as he was hoping to entertain Kelly. Bill tells Maureen that she means a lot to him and she leads him upstairs. She is horrified when she sees Maud arrive home. Maud sees Bill's van and decides to leave them alone. Maureen is confused and feels that she can't go to bed with Bill. She assures him that there will be another time. Claire is pleased when Becky tells her that she likes Des. Des tells Claire that he can't let her turn her back on the money and suggests that she moves out but continues to be his girlfriend. She warns him that if she moves out then they are finished.

13 November 1996 Nov 13, 1996 Gary can't understand why Judy isn't pregnant yet and fears he's sterile. He confesses to Judy that Samantha's been teasing him about it. Blanche arrives for Tracy's wedding and is amazed by the changes in the Street. Curly wonders how Raquel was offered a job abroad and asks her if the interviewers knew she was married. She confesses she took her ring off. He is stunned and can't bring himself to go into work. Deirdre is amazed that Tracy isn't excited about her wedding. Curly forces Raquel to admit she wants to take the job. He tells her he knows she wants him to talk her into taking it but refuses to. Maurice Preston tells the Barlows that Robert and his best man, Paul Davies, have disappeared and never returned from the stag night. He thinks Robert has changed his mind about marrying Tracy but she is adamant he'll turn up. Deirdre is distraught when Maurice tells her he's against Tracy because she took drugs. Judy tells Samantha she's not to talk to Gary about anything, especially sex. Ken and Deirdre drive around trying to find Robert. One of his friends, Greg, remembers locking him in a container in a freight yard. They go to look for him but all the containers are empty apart from two sealed ones which are on their way to Saudi Arabia. Deirdre has to stop herself from going for Greg. The police are called in to stop the shipment, fearing Robert could have suffocated. Vera lays on Tracy's wedding reception at the Rovers. Ken and Deirdre return home to find Robert there, being shouted at by Tracy for seeing her before the service. He explains he let himself out of the container. Deirdre and Ken feel they can't take any more. Curly tells Raquel he knows she has never loved him. Emily and Betty join Blanche, Ken and Deirdre at the Weatherfield Registry Office. The best man doesn't arrive so Deirdre gives Tracy Samir's wedding ring to wear. Curly tells Raquel that every time he sees her he wants her, but knows the only feelings she ever feels for him are guilt and pity. He tells her he's going on a sales conference and wants her gone by the time he returns. She tries to explain why she wants the job so much; that or the first time in her life she was picked for something. Tracy and Robert are married, afterwards Ken makes a speech and Percy produces the wedding cake. Ken tells Deirdre that for the first time ever he really feels like Tracy's father. He and Deirdre have a quiet moment together. Curly leaves for the conference without saying goodbye to Raquel.

Wed Jan 1 1997 Apr 7, 1997 Don tells Ashley he was joking about setting fire to the factory. Ashley isn't sure what to make of him. Mavis celebrates her birthday and Derek tells her she'll have to wait for her present as he has to collect it. Andy is ashamed of himself when he learns Steve has had another fourteen days added to his sentence. Jim tells Andy he must stop feeling sorry for himself and get on with his life, feeling he went through a lot worse when he was Andy's age as he was in the Army. Vera worries that Tricia and Ray Thorpe are getting serious. Mike seethes over the way Don thinks he's got away with arson. He swears to Alma that he'll make Don pay one way or the other. Tricia's delighted by the way Ray hits it off with Jamie. Jim is amazed to hear in the pub that Andy is giving up University. The neighbours gather for Mavis' party but she is worried when Derek fails to turn up. He phones to say he's stuck in traffic. When he says he'll be an hour late she accuses him of ruining her birthday. Derek annoys a motorist by cutting him up. The motorist argues with him and when Derek rows back the motorist bends the paper clip sign on the roof until it snaps off. After the motorist has driven off Derek suffers a massive heart attack and collapses in the car.

14 April 1997 Apr 14, 1997 Ken struggles to compose a fitting tribute to Derek when Mavis asks him to speak at the funeral. Derek's sister Edith Wilton arrives and makes it clear she always disliked Mavis, preferring Angela. The residents turn out for Derek's funeral at St Peter and Paul C of E with Mavis and the others - Audrey, Ken, Jim, Alec, Kevin, Angie, Emily, Percy, Betty, Alma, Mike, Gail, Martin, Don, Jack, Vera and Claire attending. Norris is late to the service and has to barge past the coffin as it's carried in. Tricia considers moving in with Ray. When the vicar asks for Derek's friend to say a tribute, Mavis is horrified when Norris beats Ken to the pulpit. Insensitive to Mavis' feelings, Norris refers to Derek as Dirk and explains how Mavis left him on the motorway and forgot his birthday. Andy visits Steve in prison and apologises to him for increasing his sentence. When Andy tells him he's leaving University because of the shock of having a gun pointed at him, Steve accuses him of feeling too sorry for himself and points out how bad his life is in prison. Alma is alarmed when Don suggests they join forces to find Mike's weak point. Mavis gets upset when Edith tells her that the residents always viewed Derek as a joke and tells them all she doesn't care because she loved him and he was a wonderful man. Alma feels threatened by Don.

18 April 1997 Apr 18, 1997 Alma is alarmed to find Don is driving the taxi as she knows he hasn't got a licence. Vera gives Tricia a hard time about moving out. Tricia tells her she'd be a fool to let Ray go as he's the only chance she's got of having a family life. Jim tries to help Andy off drink by inviting him to join him in a drinking session, saying he'll match him drink for drink. Alma gets frightened when Don drives past Weatherfield Quays and refuses to let her out of the car. He likes being in control. He tells her that he wants her to feel useless as he does, as Mike has caused him to feel. He tells her he laughed when he set fire to the factory, unnerving her, telling her he wished Mike had burnt in the fire. Chris hopes that Angie will sleep with him as he's given her a great evening but she refuses, making him angry. Alma tries to raise help on the taxi radio but Don rips it out of the car and orders her out of the car onto wasteland. He drags her out, kicking and screaming. She fears he's going to rape her, disgusting him so he hits her. Andy isn't impressed by Jim getting drunk and trying to make him see sense. Jim tells him he used to be proud of him but isn't anymore. Alma wrenches herself free of Don and runs away from him. He chases her in the taxi, cornering her in a back street and forcing her back into the car. Mike enjoys his evening out with Frances Stillman and is in no hurry to get home. Chris is confused when Angie refuses to go to bed with him. She is angry that he thought he could win her over by cooking her a meal. Tricia tells Vera she views her like a mother but refuses to stay just so she can have Brad at home. Vera realises she can't stop her leaving. Don tells Alma he's driving her home but says Mike won't want her anymore as she's dirty and rubbish. She tries to get control of the situation by telling him she now understands how much Mike hurt him. She tells him he's right; Mike cheated him out of the garage. Andy lays into Jim for pretending to be drunk whilst throwing most of the drink down the sink. Jim hits back by saying he's got nothing to live for and starts to drink for real. Andy gets upset and tells him he can't bear it when Jim drinks as he loves him. Jim tells him he's getting his own back; he watched whilst Andy threw his career away now Andy can watch him throw everything away. Don fears that he'll get locked away because he kidnapped Alma. She swears she won't tell anyone but he doesn't believe her. Andy apologises to Jim for hurting him so much and tells him he won't give up his studies. Don tells Alma she's as bad as Mike and deserves to die. He drives the taxi straight into the River Irwell at the Quays, with them both inside it.

29 June 1997 Jun 29, 1997 Sally realises Kevin is having an affair and rows with Bill for keeping the truth from her. Kevin asks Natalie to go away with him for a weekend. He tells her that he wants to spoil her. Sally leaves the girls with Deirdre and drives to Natalie's house, interrupting Kevin and Natalie's lovemaking. Kevin is horrified when Sally bursts into the house and slaps his face. Sally refuses to listen to Kevin's excuses and Natalie urges him to leave her alone. She is upset when Kevin rushes after Sally. Kevin tries to explain to Sally, saying he was lonely. She tells him that he's pathetic. He fights back, accusing her of ignoring him and getting bogged down with the children and housework. She is disgusted when he tells her that he took Natalie into their bed. He assures her that he loves her and begs forgiveness but she tells him she can't bear to see him and wants him to leave. She is dismayed to learn Rita knew about the affair and didn't tell her. She throws him out and breaks down.

14 July 1997 Jul 14, 1997 Janice orders Leanne to find a job, threatening to throw her out if she doesn't. She asks Roy for work at the cafe and when he turns her down she accuses him of letching after her. Curly has sleepless nights thanks to the Battersbys' music and can't think properly at work. Eric Firman plans to use Alma's recommendations to sell all his duff stock. Ashley hears about Maxine being Steve's alibi and is upset to discover they were together. Alma worries that she's being seen to recommend products she's never tasted. Percy holds a council of war with Emily, Mavis, Ken and Curly, to discuss how they should deal with the Battersbys. Percy is all for driving them out but the others advise caution. Curly complains to Janice about the noise and she agrees to make the girls turn off their music at 9.00pm. Maxine tells Ashley that Steve tried it on and she slapped him down and she just wants to forget all about it. She assures Ashley he's the best thing that ever happened to her. Gary is angry when Judy tells him she doesn't want to have the operation to unblock her tubes and tells him to accept the fact she cannot have his children. Curly is furious when the Battersbys only turn the music off for an hour. He forces his way into their house and smashes their CD player out onto the Street. Janice is furious, Leanne and Toyah are heartbroken and go for him. Les headbutts him to the ground and breaks his glasses. Emily and Ken are appalled and take care of bloody Curly. Alan swears to Fiona that he had nothing to do with Steve being pulled in over the stolen whisky. He accuses her of still being in love with Steve and tells her he's had enough. He breaks their engagement.

22 September 1997 Sep 22, 1997 Maud wishes Maureen wasn't marrying Fred and admits she fears she's going to lose her. Maureen assures her she won't. Fred is nervous before the wedding. Deirdre and Ashley are witnesses and Maxine, Maud and Liz attend the registry office. Sally is annoyed when Kevin assumes she couldn't have started the flood as it's not in her character. She delights in telling him she did it. Fred and Maureen are married. Steve decides to move away from Weatherfield and keep out of Alan's way. Maureen is thrilled when Fred hires a Barber Shop Quartet to sing to her after the ceremony. Jim is annoyed when Steve accuses him of not caring about his welfare. Fred and Maureen lead a conga down the Street. Natalie lays into Sally for flooding her house, calling her sour and dried-up. Sally fights back, accusing her of treating Kevin like a lap dog. They row in the Street, cheered on by the factory girls. When Natalie grabs hold of Sally, they start to wrestle on the ground. Fred takes Maureen to their reception at No.4, telling her it's their new home. She is pleased until he tells her there's no room for Maud. Jim tells Fiona that his operation wasn't a success and he could have fathered her baby. She is horrified.

8 October 1997 Oct 8, 1997 Fred locks himself away from the neighbours. Mavis and Rita fall out over Mavis' leaving party, with Rita annoyed by the way she worries about the arrangements. Ashley and Maud worry about Fred, shut away and drinking. Maud tells him it's as bad for her as it is for him. Mike waits after work for a delivery and is taken by surprise by Don who hits him over the head. He ties Mike up so he only has the use of one leg and tells him there's no delivery; it was him who set it up. Mavis' friends gather for her farewell party and feel uncomfortable as she and Rita bicker at each other all evening. Percy tells Ken he's worried about Emily being a secret drinker as he keeps finding empty bottles in the house. Don tells Mike he intends to kill him but wants to hear him beg first. Mike refuses to give him the satisfaction. When she's presented with a photograph of herself with Rita from the 1970s, Mavis remembers all the happy times they've shared. They apologise to each other and are reconciled. Don goes to club Mike to death but Angie sees him and throws her bag at him. Don escapes and Mike hobbles after him in time to see him drive the MG straight at him. Mike dives out of the way and the car smashes into the viaduct wall. It explodes in flames with Don inside.

Fri Jan 2 1998 Jan 30, 1998 Nick and Leanne feel guilty as they leave for Scotland, telling their families they're going to Leeds for the day. Vera decides to wear Alec down by singing from the landing but all he does is turn the jukebox up to drown her voice. Nick and Leanne have to drag strangers off the street to be their witnesses. Alma grows tired of Hayley following her around everywhere but feels guilty as Hayley has no other friends. Fed up with being stuck on the landing, Vera phones the fire brigade and is lifted from the bedroom window in a ladder. Nick and Leanne exchange vows and are married in Gretna Green. Vera gives Jim and Gary their cheque and they replace the staircase. Nick and Leanne agree to keep their marriage a secret until Gail gets to like Leanne. They return to Weatherfield and go to their separate houses.
S39 E02Feb 27, 1998
27 February 1998 Feb 27, 1998 Fiona is annoyed by the way Pam doesn't blame Alan for not wanting anything to do with her. She tells Pam to stay out of her life in future. Eric tells Curly that he should be marketed as the voice of Firman's, as Alma is the face. Spider makes a row at Firman's by accusing Curly of supporting whale-hunting by selling Norwegian prawns. He threatens action unless Curly stops selling them. Roy invites Hayley for a meal but decides to entertain her in the cafe rather than his flat, for fear she'll think he's rushing her. Samantha is relieved when Des goes away on business as she feels she needs some space. When Chris calls round to pick up some books he'd left behind, she invites him to stay for a drink. Steve encourages Fiona, telling her she's got a brilliant future and is better off without Alan. Samantha admits to Chris that she doesn't think she and Des have a long future together. She opens up her heart to him over a bottle of wine and they kiss. Roy is shocked when Hayley tells him that much as she likes him they can't have a physical relationship as she's a transsexual.

18 March 1998 Mar 18, 1998 Des tells Samantha he has to go away overnight to a race meeting. Ken agrees to another escort for Alec. Deirdre meets her new barrister, Stuart Hamilton, who makes her see she has to hate Jon enough to make sure he goes to prison and not her. Chris tells Sally he can't stop thinking about her and will drop Samantha for her if she asks him to. She admits she was fond of him but she now wants her marriage to work. She is annoyed by his pestering as it makes her realise she isn't happy with Kevin and is only staying with him because of the girls. Liz and Alec agree to be Deirdre's character witnesses in court. Samantha entertains Chris at No.6. Ken dines out with Babs Fanshawe but half way through the meal she collapses in the toilet. Des watches his house, hoping to catch Samantha and Chris out. He lets himself in just when Samantha has taken Chris to bed. She manages to keep Des occupied whilst Chris sneaks out of the house. Samantha is so convincing that Des feels she must be innocent. Babs dies and Ken is forced to talk to the police as everyone assumes they are a couple.

29 March 1998 Mar 29, 1998 Deirdre is horrified when Jon is let off with a suspended sentence but she is found guilty of all counts and sentenced to eighteen months imprisonment. Chris tells Kevin he wants Sally run away with him but Sally tells them both that she can't leave. Mike is furious with the verdict whilst Emily, Ken and Liz are shocked. Ken shouts abuse at Jon as he walks free. Sally tells Kevin she's never encouraged Chris and needs him to trust her that nothing happened. Maxine returns from holidaying with James Wright. Deirdre is taken to prison where all her belongings are taken from her and she is searched. Alma doesn't understand why Mike is so worked up about Deirdre being found guilty. Samantha waits with her bag for Chris but he decides he can't be bothered with her and leaves the Street without calling for her. Deirdre is put in a cell with Jackie Dobbs, a re-offender. Deirdre can't take in what is happening to her and breaks down. Kevin is annoyed when Sally can't bring herself to tell him she loves him. Samantha is distraught when she realises Chris has left without her.

1 July 1998 Jul 1, 1998 Maud annoys Jim by confronting him and accusing him of wanting people to pity him. She tells him it takes more bravery to live in a wheelchair than to be a soldier and that he should be grateful for still being alive. Alec tries to sign Sandy up for the Golden Years Agency. Roy and Hayley enjoy themselves sightseeing in Amsterdam. Emily and Ken try to convince Spider he'd be a good Councillor, shaking people up. They warn him that if he doesn't take his seat they will tell everyone he's a fraud. Maxine doesn't have any luck raising the deposit for the flat. Hayley is relieved that she's now a real woman and looks foward to living a normal life. Spider tells Emily and Ken he will take his seat if elected. They tell him he's going to have to change his appearance and take him for a haircut. Jim thanks Maud for her pep-talk. Greg advises Maxine to tell Fred she can't afford the flat, saying he'll then talk to him and get it cheaper. Alec gives Sandy his first escort assignment. Hayley is frustrated when Roy can't bring himself to declare his feelings for her.

3 July 1998 Jul 3, 1998 Hayley is sad that Roy has to return home. She questions him over his thoughts about her but he can't express himself. Spider is uncomfortable in his parted hair, suit, collar and tie. Emily organises for him to have his campaign photographs taken on the Street. After Roy has gone Hayley finds he's left her a gold watch. Greg tells Fred Maxine can't afford the flat but he can. Hayley quickily packs and rushes to the airport, telling Roy she's coming back with him. She tells him she knows his feelings and she's happy to go along with him, in his own time. Audrey collects her professional campaign photographs and is upset as she appears so old in them. To boost her moral Fiona and Maxine give her a beauty treatment. Sandy takes time off work to escort for Alec. Vera is annoyed when he's spotted in town when he's meant to be ill. Hayley and Roy return home but she is stopped by an Immigration Officer as her passport says she's a man. Vera realises Sandy is acting as an escort for Alec and sacks him. She tells Jack she's had enough hiring bar staff - he can take over. After a humiliating time at the airport Hayley is allowed to leave.

2 September 1998 Sep 2, 1998 Janice and Les arrive in London and call at Ronnie Clegg's house. He tries to get rid of them but is forced to explain to his wife Paula who they are. Paula is stunned to discover Ronnie has a daughter. Janice breaks down when she finds Toyah isn't with Ronnie. Toyah is pleased to be with the man she thinks is her dad and is glad that he accepts her and gives her a bed. Kevin is surprised when Sally splashes out on his birthday. Anne creates a letter out of words cut from Curly's book. Janice rows with Ronnie for never caring about Toyah. Rita arranges with Mavis to be her Matron of Honour. Janice and Les call at Ronnie's old address and talk to Neil Flynn. Toyah hides from them but is puzzled when she hears Janice introducing herself to Neil. She realises Neil isn't her father and begins to feel frightened. Jack and Vera agree to Alec buying them out so long as solicitors are involved. He talks them out of involving solicitors as they're so expensive. He agrees to pay them 50% of the pub's value. Toyah is terrified when Neil locks her in the flat and admits he's not her father. He explains he shared a cell with Ronnie in prison. When she tries to call for help he binds and gags her. Janice is alarmed to hear Neil was in prison for GBH. She fears Toyah might be with him after all and she and Les rush back to his flat but he's disappeared. Janice calls in the police. Neil unties Toyah to get her into his van. Suspicious Kevin spies on Sally as she and Greg kiss in the factory. Neil takes Toyah to Epping Forest. Kevin locks Sally out of the house and throws her bags into the Street. She is distraught but he refuses to talk to her. Greg takes her in. Toyah breaks free and is chased through the forest by Neil.

Fri Jan 1 1999 Jan 1, 1999 Greg attacks Sally but she manages to escape him and reach the front door. Nick sees them struggling and rushes to Sally's aid. He fights Greg off. Leanne hears about the fight and is reconciled with Nick over her concern for his injuries. Rita comforts terrified Sally and tells her that she must report him to the police. Greg packs and leaves the Street after stealing all the cash he can find at No.5. Natalie admits to Lorraine that one of the reasons she bought the Rovers was to remind herself of Des all the time. Underworld factory girl, Alison Wakefield finds Kevin attractive. She has too much to drink and introduces herself to him. He is flattered by her interest and kisses her on the stroke of midnight. The Duckworths are upset to find their ruined clothes dumped in the back yard. As the residents see in the New Year, Martin discovers Alf dead in his chair at the Platts' party. Martin is horrified.

7 March 1999 Mar 7, 1999 Rita accuses Natalie of enjoying ruining people's lives. Natalie is baffled until Rita tells her Ian is Sharon's fiancé. Rita and Betty are certain she's lying when she swears she didn't know. Vik tells Steve his accounts are in a terrible state. Gary's father, Peter Mallett, and brother, Shane arrive for the christening. Shane feels Gary should be relieved the twins look like him after Judy's affair. Ian is stunned when Natalie confronts him over his lies. He tells her he's confused by his feelings and never planned to hurt either Sharon or her. She tells him he's weak and pathetic and is amazed that he intends to go through with the wedding. She is stunned when he says he hopes they can still see each other after he's married. Ian begs Rita not to tell Sharon about him and Sharon, swearing Natalie did all the running. Vera, Jack and Jim are the Malletts' godparents. Jack discovers he can't be godfather as he hasn't been christened himself so the vicar quickly christens him. Ken and Vera are forced to be his godparents. Natalie proves to Rita that Ian would carry on being unfaithful by phoning him and letting her listen as he tries to woo her again. Sharon is nervous on her wedding day but is taken care of by Sally. Whilst everyone goes to the church, Rita tells her that Ian has been seeing Natalie. Sharon blames herself for rushing Ian into marriage and makes excuses for him. She tells herself he still loves her and feels it was a last fling. Rita is amazed when she says the wedding will go ahead. Vik warns Steve that his business is going down the drain. He suggests he reduces his outgoings. Rita gives Sharon away at St. Mary's but whilst Ian says his vows Sharon attacks him, calling him a liar before running out of the church. Sharon goes for Natalie, calling her a whore. Natalie pities her. Curly returns to find Jackie and Tyrone living in his house.

The residents turn on Les for ruining the wedding. Mike calls at Julia's flat only to find it's deserted and she's moved out. Hayley is stunned when Roy gathers all their friends together at the cafe, with Jessica Lundy. She is taken aback when Great Uncle Bert offers his arm and gives her away, with Jessica performing the ceremony in the cafe. They are married. Gail is horrified when Leanne tells her Nick has left her and emigrated to Canada. Roy is thrilled when Hayley tells him she's legally changed her name to "Cropper". Mike receives photographs through the post of him in bed with Julia.

16 May 1999 May 16, 1999 Greg phones Mike and tells him he's not stupid enough to go to the factory. He orders him to bring the money to No. 13, saying he's holding the Websters. Sally struggles to remain calm as he refuses to let go of Sophie. He tells her that he's blackmailing Mike and demands she collects the money whilst he holds on to the girls. She goes to walk across the Street but Kevin sees her and makes a fuss about her leaving the girls unattended. Kevin gets alarmed when frightened Rosie calls out to him, saying Greg is in the house. Kevin tries to break down the door but Sally pleads with him to leave them alone for the sake of the girls. Kevin causes a scene, alerting the residents to Greg's presence. Mike and Alison try to calm him and have to restrain him. Greg blames Rosie and Sally has to stop him hurting her. Kevin calls the police and Mike realises the situation is hopeless for him. Greg is furious when the police turn up. Sally begs him to let the girls go but he feels they're his only bargaining tools. Kevin grows impatient as the police refuse to rush the house. Greg blames Sally for ruining his life and tells her he despised her. She tries to keep the girls occupied but they are terrified as Greg shouts and hurts Sally. Ken is appalled when Deirdre tells him about Mike being blackmailed over his affair. He feels the police should be told. The police surround No. 13. When Greg rips the phone from the wall the girls scream, causing the police to smash into the house. When Greg tries to grab hold of Sophie, Sally smashes a chair over his head and knocks him unconscious.

6 August 1999 Aug 6, 1999 Linda overhears Alma referring to her as a gold digger and tells her she's a sad old woman. Fred and Audrey take Sidney Templeton out for a drive to probe his background and finances. They are horrified when he suddenly dies sat in the back of the car. Audrey feels they've killed him but Fred is more concerned in getting him back to the home without being spotted. Ken talks Curly into employing him as a trolley boy at Freshco's. Alma treats herself to a holiday in Spain. Fred and Audrey are forced to take Sidney to the hospital when Maud's presence prevents them returning him to Mayfield Court. They break the news to Maud who tells them she's grateful to them for trying to interfere on her behalf. Fred comforts her as she weeps. Deirdre is furious to discover Ken has taken a menial job. He assures her he wants a job where he doesn't have to think but she feels it's humiliating.

24 September 1999 Sep 24, 1999 Emily tries to comfort the twins and rings for an ambulance. She raises the alarm and breaks down when Ken feels Judy's pulse and realises she's dead. Sharon comes round after taking some pills and is filled with self-disgust at trying to kill herself. Natalie goes to the wedding to bring Gary home, saying Judy is ill. He is concerned and rushes home only to discover she's dead. He embraces her body and cries over her, not believing she's dead. Rita discovers Sharon's flat full of pills and drink. Sharon tells her she's sunk as low as she can get and couldn't even do a proper job of suicide. Gary breaks down, remembering Judy is the only woman he's ever loved. He doesn't understand why she died.

26 September 1999 Sep 26, 1999 Mike is kept in a police cell all night. The Freshco's team stumble through the moors all night. Ashley worries that Fred can't cope whilst Curly turns into a dictator, bossing the others around. Nita challenges his leadership and takes charge. Fred twists his ankle so Curly suggests leaving him. Ashley refuses to abandon him and Nita suggests they carry him between them. They bear him on an old gate and are sympathetic towards him until they find him secretly eating chocolate. Even Ashley turns on Fred. Curly is forced to hand control over to Nita when the others look to her. Blanche offers her services to Rita as an assistant and doesn't give her chance to refuse. Back at the Lodge, Fred tells the organisers how Curly wanted to leave him on the moors. Mike goes to court, is fined £500 and banned from driving for a year. He feels humiliated. Sally and Danny go for dinner at the Platts' but there's an emergency at the hospital so Martin is late getting home, annoying Gail. Freshco boss James Kitching takes an interest in Nita's progress. She is thrilled.

Sunday, 2nd January 2000 Jan 2, 2000 Curly is stunned to see Raquel. She struggles to keep calm and shows him a photograph of a little girl, explaining that he has a daughter, Alice. He can't believe it and rows with her for not telling him before. She explains that she didn't want him to try and force her back to live with him. He tells her this is the worse thing she's ever done to him. She tells him she often tells Alice about him and they look at her star. He hopes she wants to be reconciled and is gutted when she tells him she's going to marry Armand de Beaux, a forty-eight year old French gent who she works for as a nanny. She explains she loves him and wants a divorce as she is pregnant. Curly agrees to give her a divorce. He is touched when she urges him to visit Alice as much as he wants and that Armand will never adopt her. She urges him to stop clinging to the past and just enjoy being her friend. He agrees. They wish each other a Happy New Year and she leaves.

Steve tells her to leave him alone and gives the lunch to Eileen. Craig and Rosie listen to hardcore goth-rock music in Craig's bedroom then they go shopping to a clothes shop called "The Abyss". Tommy and Angela take the mickey. The Baldwin family (including Mike and Adam) plus Candice get ready to go to the football match to support Warren. Charlie gives Shelley another dress but this time it's the right size. Warren's disappointed to find himself on the subs' bench. Craig and Rosie arrive back in matching long black coats. Warren gets called on at the very last minute. The whistle blows and Warren kicks the ball in frustration. The referee books him with a yellow card. Shelley tells Charlie she's changed the dress for a smaller one, she's now on a diet and intends to wear it for Valentine's Day. Charlie's secretly pleased as this is what he intended to happen.
