Ted Danson shines in "A Man on the Inside," a humorous and touching tale of a retired widower who finds unexpected friendship while investigating thefts at a retirement home. The storyline is both funny and poignant, with no explicit criticism noted.
I had low hopes for this one. While a fan of Ted Danson's Sam Malone, I'm not a fan of his other characters; I thought this might be a silly show like "All Murders in the Building"; I wondered how they could make a season out of this and keep it interesting. I was pleasantly surprised on all counts. Ted Danson portrayed the insecurities and inexperience of his character spot-on. The writers added a lot of interesting and funny supporting characters, including Sally Struthers, who was unrecognizable except for that lilt in her voice. Most importantly, the show went below the surface to explore Charles' relationship with his daughter, what a retirement home was like on the inside, some of their world when outside, and more. Eight episodes was apropos to cover a case and this. Impressive body of work.
