24 Hours in A&E

Keep on Moving

Release Date: Jan 1, 2013
Episode Description

The RTS award-winning documentary series continues from St George's hospital in south west London, which has one of the world's most advanced and busiest A&E departments. This programme focuses on people facing adversity head on. 61-year-old Erin is rushed to St George's after she collapsed at home and suffering with a severe ear infection. The condition can spread to the brain and, in the most severe cases, can even kill people. Erin has been battling the infection for several weeks, but the pain is now so severe that medics have to give her intravenous morphine. She's sent for a scan to see what caused the collapse and whether she suffered any damage to her head in the fall. Erin previously survived breast cancer and has suffered numerous complications, including heart failure, as a result of the treatment. "Mum was so optimistic," says daughter Mason. "It's heart-breaking watching someone you love suffer. I don't know anyone as strong as my mum that could go through all of those illnesses one after the other and still be here and she's still smiling." 70-year-old part-time DJ Tony arrives in A&E after a high-speed bicycle accident. Tony is having difficulty breathing, so he's sent for an urgent CT scan to discover any serious internal injuries. Doctors discover he has fractured ribs and a collapsed lung, which will need to be re-inflated. Tony was training for a 100-mile charity bike ride when he had his crash. "Mum does say to him, 'You're 70 now, you haven't got the body of a 40-year-old'," says daughter Jo. "She just thinks he should slow down. He just wants to live life to the full." Meanwhile 39-year-old cabin crew worker Charlie has come to St George's with his partner, Danny. He's been off work for a week after breaking his arm falling off his scooter. Charlie was treated in hospital at the time and had surgery to fix his arm and a cast put on. But he discharged himself and removed the cast. Now he can't bear the pain and needs more treatment.
