Underwater is praised for its eerie atmosphere, anxiety-inducing camera work, and original creature design, elevating it above its predictable plot. The film blends sci-fi, survival, and horror elements effectively. Kristen Stewart and T.J. Miller's performances are highlighted. Some criticism includes the difficulty in following action due to dark environments and fast-paced scenes.
Thanks to an eerie atmosphere, anxiety inducing camera work, and fresh creature design, Underwater is elevated above its surface-level plot to a frightening game of cat and mouse, reminiscent of Jaws. The horror genre has long been a vehicle for filmmakers to take creative liberties and experiment with new ideas. Director William Eubank's genre-bending Underwater is the latest creature feature to stir elements of sci-fi, survival and terror onto the big screen. Originally filmed in 2017, Underwater stands out as a terrifying aquatic adventure that supports its predictable plot with a chilling atmosphere, thrilling tone and original creature design.
Underwater is FIVE STARS, TEN OUTA TEN WOULD RECOMMEND. This movie fulfilled all of my my hopes and dreams for an "Alien"-esque, Lovecraftian deep sea horror movie that I feel like I've been craving for a long time. It was actually about to get like, maybe a 3 outa 5, until the final act, with the most fantastic creature reveal I've seen since like, The Ritual. UUUUGH I JUST REALLY LIKED IT IT WAS REALLY GOOD AND I really loved Kristen Stewart and T.J. Miller. My only criticism is it was a little hard on the eyes; diving suits, dark environment, underwater particles, fast action, made figuring out what was happening a little difficult sometimes, but I can overlook that in the name of "realism". If you liked the game "SOMA" or the movie "Alien", you'll love this.
