"Midsommar" is praised for its creepy folk-horror atmosphere, stunning cinematography, and complex, symbolic story. It evokes a sense of foreboding and discomfort without relying on jump scares or supernatural elements. Some scenes are criticized for being overly long, but overall, it's seen as a masterpiece with outstanding performances and rich cultural elements.
If you watch this and don’t think even a little bit of the Wicker Man (even the Nick Cage remake) then you’re doing it wrong. Go watch the original Christopher Lee/Edward Woodward Wicker Man, then watch (a pantheon of classic horror movies, then) Midsommar. The latter is in the tradition of creepy folk-horror stories, where the magic and monsters are all too real. Not so much jump scares, just all encompassing foreboding, terror and creepiness. Perfect first date movie.
It was truly scary. Was also devoid of magic, and monsters. Just people and the evils & superstitions that come with them. It's pretty morbid and gory, so don't watch if you're sensitive to that kind of thing
LOVED.But I'm also a sucker for Ari Aster in general. My only gripes were a few scenes lasted a bit too long but Ari did a good job of making me extremely uncomfortable in those instances.
