The movie "Maria" features phenomenal cinematography by Ed Lachman and fabulous acting. While it may take some time to engage with, it becomes thoroughly entertaining once it does.
Angelina Jolie singing Opera was NOT on my 2024 bingo card!
An interesting view of the last days of the opera singer, and the demons she has to carry on. Perhaps it’s me but the performance of Mrs. Jolie doesn’t make the cut, and the playback looks off, not the best feature of the movie.
Of all of the actors out there to portray the world renowned Maria Callas, Angelina Jolie? REALLY? Aside from the fact that she’s totally wooden in her acting, they needed to have cast a true singer who would have sung with Maria Callas opera tracks so that when they pulled in tight for close-up shots you would see their *throat muscles* actually straining, tightening and moving properly as an actual singer’s throat muscles move. It was glaringly obvious that Ms Jolie was lip syncing… and poorly done at that.It’s unfortunate that the lead actor in this biopic was worthless when the rest of the film was absolutely stunning… the production; the cinematography; the wardrobe (OMG I’d kill for that wardrobe); shot in Paris the city always makes for the most beautiful backdrop. Truly both the film and Maria Callas are deserving of a much higher quality and caliber lead performer.
