"Jarhead" is seen as anticlimactic with excessive lewd behavior, more than realistic for the time. Some elements like the 'sh***ers' in the desert and the hype before crossing the border are accurate. The ending is abrupt and lacks closure. The depiction of Marine Snipers' eagerness to kill is questioned.

It’s alright. Anticlimactic. There is an over abundance of lewd & raunchy behavior, far more than was realistic at the time. It’s like they crammed 4 years of sexual deviance into 90 min. Many elements were true of the time, especially the ‘sh***ers’ in the desert. Yes, Battalion Commanders were that hyped. I can’t speak for Marine Snipers, but those I was around weren’t that eager to kill anyone. We just didn’t want to be exposed to nerve agents. The hype just prior to crossing the border was accurate. We were expecting 50% casualties crossing the minefields. The ‘highway of death’ was real, but it would not be where this unit was located. The experimental PB tablets they were forced to take was true. This is still controversial and may be a cause of Gulf War Syndrome when combined with other common exposures. The ending was fairly abrupt and without closure. When Swofford says, “We are still in the desert,” this is true for many of us who served.
