The film doesn't settle for merely showcasing (great) zombies and gore; it forces us to confront the crude logic of militarism and the cold rationality of scientism. Romero shows us that, in a world in tatters, the monstrosity truly resides in the social institutions that, in theory, should offer a sense of security - in the case of the military, and a peaceful future - in the case of the scientific community. As a result, the film not only delivers excellent horror but also offers a disturbing reflection on the flaws and absurdities of our social structures. And all of this with plenty of guts and brains. Wonderful.
