Come and See (1985) is a masterpiece. This is a film that you endure rather than enjoy.Elem Klimov’s final film is a devastating glimpse into the shear terror humans are subject upon one another during war. It takes place during the German invasion of Belarus and follows a young man named Flyora. From a green young recruit to death, destruction and human indifference you experience the war at a personal, human level. There is no glory, there is no honor, there is only pain.Aleksei Kravchenko’s performance is one of, if not the, most haunting acts I’ve ever seen. He barely speaks, especially in the last half of the film but he conveys such anguish and weight with his face. It’s beautifully done but heartbreaking. All the above is to say is that this is one of those films that should be required viewing. Everyone needs to see this, lest we repeat the past. It’s been three days since I watched this and it still sticks with me. 5/5
