Является вольным переизложением фильма «Сверкающие седла» Мела Брукса, что подчеркивается его наличием в касте, а также наличием эдакого «хулиганства» на его манер. Помимо этого, «Пес-самурай» постоянно комментирует клише жанра, в котором он заперт, но, увы, почти никак не играется с ними. Такой подход вкупе с интересными визуальными переходами выделяет «Город кошек» среди современных мультипликационных коллег, однако само произведение от этого не сказать, чтобы становилось сильнее.
