The ugly extremes of the racial tension are so unnecessarily brash you can just hear the reactionaries saying “You could never make this movie the same way today” as if that’s all a bad thing. The problem is more that the transition from animosity to mutual respect which would later make up the entire buddy cop subgenre is not something that’s really set up throughout the cruising fun of the plot, and it feels especially needed to be able to warm up to Nolte’s character even slightly. Still, it looks great and has several memorable scenes. I love how Hill attached a slimy sexiness to Remar through different roles.
