What to Watch When You’re Done With The Handmaid’s Tale

I’m going to need a 2-day rest period. That’s what any sane person would say after they’re done marathoning the first two seasons of The Handmaid’s Tale. It’s amazing. It’s heavy. You won’t find any sugarcoating here.

Here’s a list of movies and shows starring the cast of The Handmaid’s Tale that won’t leave you feeling like you’re constantly “under his eye.” (I’m easing you back in, don’t worry.)

Shakespeare in Love (starring Joseph Fiennes)  

Fiennes stars here as the legendary playwright, William Shakespeare. If you’re feeling more “period piece” than “totalitarian future,” then this one’s for you.

Nerve (starring Samira Wiley)

While Nerve (based on the novel by Jeanne Ryan) is technically a thriller, luckily it’s a fun one. The film stars Emma Roberts and Dave Franco as gamers who bite off a little bit more than they can chew. Samira Wiley (Moira in The Handmade’s Tale) co-stars.

Chuck (starring Yvonne Strahovski)

This is Yvonne’s de facto breakout role as Sarah, a secret agent who is exactly nothing like her character in The Handmaid’s Tale. Chuck is about a hapless electronics store employee who ends up a spy after a cache of government secrets is mistakenly uploaded into his brain.  

Gilmore Girls (starring Alexis Bledel)

I’m pretty sure Gilmore Girls is literally the opposite of The Handmaid’s Tale. So if you just need to decompress and love life for a while, let’s take a comfortable stroll down to a quirky little town called Stars Hollow.

Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants (starring Alexis Bledel)

If ever there were a time for a feel-good chick flick, it. Is. Now. Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants stars Alexis Bledel, America Ferrera, Blake Lively, and Amber Tamblyn. And do you really need to know anything other than that?

The Internship (starring Max Minghella)

A lighthearted comedy starring Max Minghella (plus Owen Wilson and Vince Vaughn *wink*), The Internship is about two aging salesmen who boldly apply for internships at Google when they lose their jobs.

Captain Fantastic (starring Ann Dowd)

A story about a father (Viggo Mortensen) raising his troupe of six children practically in the wild, Captain Fantastic is visually stunning and stars some truly spectacular young actors. Ann Dowd is featured in a co-starring role.

The One I Love (starring Elisabeth Moss)

Elisabeth Moss doesn’t always go for the easy scripts. This darkly quirky romantic comedy is one of her more interesting choices. Starring Mark Duplass, Mary Steenburgen, and Ted Danson, the film boasts an 80% score on Rotten Tomatoes. Think of it as a love story with a bizarre, but very charming, wormhole. (Just go with it!)
