8 Shows That’ll Get You in the Mood for Halloween

Halloween lovers know the feeling of waiting for back-to-school inventory to be replaced with spooky costumes and decorations in stores each year. Technically, Halloween only rolls around once every 365 days, but for some of us, it’s a way of life. While horror film classics like The Shining and Halloween are indispensable, TV series can keep you occupied with creepy, witchy plots throughout the year.

In this post, we’ve rounded up fantasy and horror shows that you can binge before and after the beloved holiday comes around.

Sabrina the Teenage Witch

Of the shows listed, the sitcom Sabrina the Teenage Witch has the sweetest and most lighthearted depiction of the supernatural. In it, Sabrina juggles with her newfound witch powers with being a teenager. She does this, of course, all with the help of her cat Salem and quirky, centuries-old aunts, Zelda and Hilda. The show, being a ’90s classic, will receive a Netflix reboot treatment, but the new series will have a darker twist.

Once Upon a Time

Disney dominates the big screen each year (as well as Halloween costume racks, if we’re honest). If you want a long-term dose of princesses, witches, and more, check out Once Upon a Time. The imaginative fantasy series takes place in Storybrooke, Maine, where real fairytale characters reside after having their memories wiped out by the Evil Queen Regina. Disney fans will recognize classic characters such as Snow White and Elsa.

The Vampire Diaries

This steamy, dark fantasy series is packaged in an insatiable love triangle between a teenage girl named Elena and two vampire brothers, Damon and Stefan. The story occurs in the fictional town of Mystic Falls, Virginia, which is full of supernatural history. Despite the title of the series, you’ll get your fix of other Halloween creatures, such as werewolves, witches, and ghosts.

The Twilight Zone

While we can’t wait for Jordan Peele’s reboot of this classic series to come out, we still love the original anthology series. The Twilight Zone isn’t full of jump scares or gnarly monsters, but its storytelling style full of twists will leave you spooked and primed for Halloween. We dare you not to get the heebie-jeebies when thinking of Rod Serling’s voice.

Supernatural

If Halloween was an aesthetic, Supernatural would be the most Halloween series on this list. The long-running show revolves around the adventures of two monster-hunting brothers named Sam and Dean Winchester (like the haunted house and Helen Mirren movie). While Supernatural has slowly become a serial show over the years, we still get one-off episodes based on creepy monster lore every now and then.

American Horror Story

Each season of Ryan Murphy’s horror anthology series resets with a new story that’s loosely based on true events. Lovers of supernatural mysteries will devour the plots around subjects such as haunted houses and witches. The cast also changes each season (besides Sarah Paulson and Evan Peters). Increasingly, however, more actors are sticking around in the series, like Kathy Bates and Billie Lourd.

Castle Rock

Nothing screams horror more than Stephen King. Hulu’s new anthology series takes inspiration from the characters in King’s stories, including It, The Night Shift, Salem’s Lot, Misery, and The Shining. If not for the Stephen King fandom, it’s worth watching the show for the star-studded cast, which includes André Holland, Melanie Lynskey, and Bill Skarsgård.

Lore

Avid podcast listeners may know Aaron Mahnke’s critically acclaimed folklore series that examines creepy non-fiction stories. In 2017, Mahnke launched an entire Amazon Prime show based on his podcast. The second season will premiere roughly a week before Halloween on October 19, 2018.
