1. The Witch
Type: Horror, Mystery, Thriller
Release Year: 2016
Director: Robert Eggers
Starring: Anya Taylor-Joy, Ralph Ineson, Kate Dickie
Rating: 91% RT, 6.8/10 IMDB

In New England circa 1630, an English farmer, his wife, and their five children flee their town after finding themselves on the brink of banishment. But perhaps they should have taken their chances with an angry mob — no sooner have they left town than strange and seemingly occult things begin to happen. The family begins to suspect teenage daughter Thomasin could be a witch and, well, what happens after will haunt you (especially if you’re anywhere near the woods).

2. Veronica
Type: Drama, Horror
Release Year: 2017
Director: Paco Plaza
Starring: Sandra Escacena, Bruna Gonzalez, Claudia Placer
Rating: 87% RT, 6.2/10 IMDB

There are possession movies, and then there is Veronica. From the onset, the bleak home life of young Veronica and her even younger brother and sister creates an uncomfortable tone. But then Veronica does the thing we all know better than to do (but often do it anyway) — she and a few friends use a Ouija board at school to try to invoke her father’s spirit. Only, she could never imagine what would actually follow her home.

3. The Conjuring
Type: Horror, Mystery, Thriller
Release Year: 2013
Director: James Wan
Starring: Patrick Wilson, Vera Farmiga, Ron Livingston
Rating: 86% RT, 7.5/10 IMDB

If by some chance you haven’t yet watched this cinematic retelling of paranormal investigators Ed and Lorraine Warren, file it under “must see.” What happens when Ed and Lorraine — played masterfully by Patrick Wilson and Vera Farmiga, respectively — attempt to help a family being haunted in an old farmhouse will keep you up at night. Tip: Institute a no-clapping policy in your household before you hit play.

4. A Dark Song
Type: Drama, Horror, Fantasy
Release Year: 2016
Director: Liam Gavin
Starring: Steve Oram, Catherine Walker, Susan Loughnane
Rating: 91% RT, 6.1/10 IMDB

There are no lengths a mother won’t go to for her child. In A Dark Song, a woman mourning the loss of her child takes that devotion too far by teaming up with an occultist in an abandoned house. Although they hope to summon the dead, what they conjure is arguably much darker.

5. Raw
Type: Horror, Drama, Mystery, Thriller
Release Year: 2017
Director: Julia Ducournau
Starring: Garance Marillier, Ella Rumpf, Rabah Nait Oufella
Rating: 91% RT, 7/10 IMDB

A heady and atmospheric French horror flick, Raw centers on sixteen-year-old Justine — a bright young woman just starting out in veterinary school, a family tradition. Things take a troubling turn, though, when Justine is forced to eat raw meat as part of a hazing ritual. To be clear, you should avoid eating during this coming-of-age tale like no other. Provocative and at times disturbing as hell, it will leave you a little nauseous.

6. Train to Busan
Type: Horror, Action & Adventure, Thriller, Mystery
Release Year: 2016
Director: Sang-ho Yeon
Starring: Gong Yoo, Jung Yu-mi, Ma Dong-seok
Rating: 96% RT, 7.5/10 IMDB

If there’s such a thing as a cerebral zombie horror, Train to Busan is it —this is one of those movies that makes you wonder why everyone isn’t talking about it. You’ll feel panic-stricken, claustrophobic and wholly unnerved as a group of terrified bus passengers try to fight their way through a viral outbreak. And just when you think things can’t get worse, they do.

7. The Babadook
Type: Horror, Thriller, Drama, Mystery
Release Year: 2014
Director: Jennifer Kent
Starring: Essie Davis, Noah Wiseman, Daniel Henshall
Rating: % RT, /10 IMDB

Some people find this film next-level terrifying, while others find it laugh-out-loud funny. It’s a strange paradox, but The Babadook can be both. If you give it a chance, though, you won’t be disappointed. The story of Amelia, her son Samuel and the monster he believes is plaguing them blurs the lines of reality in the most jarring ways.

8. The Wailing
Type: Horror, Mystery, Thriller
Release Year: 2016
Director: Na Hong-jin
Starring: Jun Kunimura, Hwang Jung-min, Kwak Do-won
Rating: 99% RT, 7.4/10 IMDB

At nearly three hours long, The Wailing isn’t for the faint of heart. Having said that, the rewards you reap are worth it for those who can stick it out. When sinister things being to happen in a sleepy rural village after a mysterious stranger arrives, suspicion turns to the newcomer. As the town dives deeper for answers, they fall straight down a rabbit hole of demonic forces. Have a cocktail ready; you’re gonna need it.

9. It Follows

Release Year: 2014
Director: David Robert Mitchell
Starring: Maika Monroe, Keir Gilchrist, Olivia Luccardi
Rating: 97% RT, 6.8/10 IMDB

Casual sex will never seem like a worse idea than it does after watching It Follows. While most sexual encounters have some strings attached, the young people in this film discover that sometimes those strings can be deadly. Instead of relying on cheap tricks for scares, this movie refreshingly builds off of the tension in your mind.

10. Gerald’s Game

Director: Mike Flanagan
Starring: Cala Gugino, Bruce Greenwood
