11 Series to Watch After Pretty Little Liars

The cast of “Pretty Little Liars” from Warner Bros. Television.

It’s been nine long months since the final episode of Pretty Little Liars aired on Freeform, and if you’re stuck feeling like there’s a little something missing in your life, then you certainly aren’t the only one.

Pretty Little Liars was a show that succeeded, not only because it was a show about young women, but because it was a show that was fiercely dedicated to its genre: heavily rooted in mystery, it turned its protagonists into a troupe of texting private detectives, most of which just happened to be teenage girls.

Here are 11 series you should add to your to-watch list if you’re still missing PLL.

Riverdale — Netflix

If you’re not watching Riverdale, then you’re missing out. I apologize for sounding like an older college kid trying to sell contraband to the young kids on my block, but it’s for good reason. This show, which brings the Archie comics to life in modern film noir glory, is not one to miss and truly is the “next” Pretty Little Liars.

Veronica Mars — Rent or buy episodes from $1.99 each.

Veronica Mars was not your average Nancy Drew. This series from series creator Rob Thomas stars the luminous Kristen Bell at her very best. Definitely worth the watch. (And the rewatch. And the tri-watch?)

Desperate Housewives — Hulu/Yahoo View

Think of it as Pretty Little Liars 20 years later. It’s got all the boxes checked. Small town? Check! Drama? Check! Intrigue? Check! Murder? Check!

Terriers — Rent or buy episodes from $1.99 each.

Just another lost gem from TV history. Despite being all kinds of wonderful, Terriers only lasted one season on FX, and never even made it to DVD. Donal Logue stars as an ex-cop-turned-private-detective, and Michael Raymond-James is his requisite best friend/side-kick.

Veronica Mars: The Movie — Rent or buy from $2.99 and up.

A follow-up to the Veronica Mars series set 10 years later, this film was made possible by its fans and kickstarter. While these characters may play better on the small screen, it is worth it just to see the gang one last time and to follow Veronica as she solves one final (?) mystery.

How to Get Away With Murder — Netflix

Shondaland at its finest. Not only does this show boast probably one of the greatest actresses of our time (both of big and small screen), Viola Davis, but the mystery here is undeniably delicious.

Twin Peaks — Netflix/Amazon Prime/Hulu/Showtime/CBS All Access

Who killed Laura Palmer? Even if you’ve never seen Twin Peaks (1990) and have no idea who Laura Palmer is, you’ve probably heard that question. That’s the question that the series begins with, and one that still haunts the characters throughout its original two-season run. Luckily for fans, the series re-launched on Showtime with its third season in 2017.

Gossip Girl — Netflix

Gossip Girl was a bit pre-Pretty Little Liars, and even though the identity of Gossip Girl pales in comparison to the mystery of A, this show has more than enough drama to make up for it.

13 Reasons Why — Netflix

There’s no real mystery at the core of this series, but the playing field, complete with cyber-bullying and a heavy dose of dramatic intrigue, is very familiar. That earns this series a spot on this list.

Scream (Series) — Netflix

This MTV series resurrected the popular film series of the same name, and to great effect. There are elements here that will make any PLL fan happy. (And, okay… a little jumpy.)

Big Little Lies — HBO

With names like Nicole Kidman and Reese Witherspoon, how can you go wrong? This seven-episode mystery series is short enough that even viewers with the tightest schedules should be able to power through it pretty quickly.
